Track And Field Garners Top Finishes At UNCG Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – The Savannah State indoor men's and women's track and field teams earned 19 top-ten finishes at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartan Team Challenge this past weekend.  
 
The Tigers led the charge for SSU with 14 top-ten finishes. SSU senior Cameron Hall won the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.01, followed closely by teammate Lemaar Shakir in second with a time of 8.25.
 
The men's relay team of Shakir, Brandon Davis, Malik Franklin and Donterious Copeland ran a 3:21.77 in the 4x400 for a first place finish.
 
In the 200 meter dash, Justin Leggett finished in second with at time of 22.48. Leggett earned a fifth place finish in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.99.
 
Davis and Shakir finished near the top of the 400 meter dash. Davis ran a 51.02 for third place, while Shakir followed with a 51.39 in fourth place. Franklin ran a 52.09 in the same event, finishing in sixth.
 
Franklin led the Tigers in the field, winning the triple jump event with a distance of 14.44m. Copeland finished fourth  in the same event with a distance of 13.53.
 
Christian Conner – who is also a defensive linemen for SSU football -  had a throw of 13.43m in the shot put, to finish in second place. Derrick Akins finished fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 12.53m. In the pole vault, Dolphurs Hayes cleared 4.40m for a fourth place finish.
 
SSU newcomer Asea Gilmore led the Lady Tigers with a second place finish in the 800 meter run, registering a time of 2:19.07.
 
In the field, Alysia Potts finished with a distance of 2.75m for fifth place in the pole vault. Kortney Sizemore finished behind Potts with a 2.75m jump as well.
 
Mia McLean finished in sixth place in the triple jump with a distance of 11.03m, followed by Miara Elmore in eighth with a jump of 10.73m.
 
Joining the women's track & field squad this semester are several SSU volleyball players. Autumn Sessions finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 7.28m, followed by Lynae Brant (6.88m) in 11th, and Zariya Thomas (6.79m) in 12th place.
 
Savannah State continues the indoor track & field season on Feb. 7 at the University of South Carolina Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
