Softball Faces Hampton To Open 2014 MEAC Championship

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – The Savannah State softball team opens the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament on May 8 at 1:30 p.m. in Ormond Beach Florida against reigning MEAC Champion Hampton University.
 
SSU earned the No. 3 Southern Division seed this year with a 9-6 conference record. They finished the regular season with a 25-19 overall record.
 
Hampton finished the season with a 15-3 conference record earning the No. 2 seed out of the Northern Division. Hampton finished 27-18 overall.
 
SSU's opening game will be a rematch of the 2013 MEAC Championship semifinal game. SSU was defeated by Hampton 3-1. The Lady Tigers fell one game short of the title game as they lost to Norfolk State, 4-5, in the semifinal elimination game.
 
Hampton defeated Norfolk State to claim the 2013 MEAC Title.
 
The winner of Game 3 between SSU and Hampton will play the winner of Game 1 (10 a.m.) between Southern Division No. 1 seeded Bethune-Cookman and Northern Division No. 4 seeded Coppin State at 7 p.m. Thursday evening.
 
Both losers of Game 3 and Game 1 will face each other in the elimination bracket at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
 
The three-day tournament is formatted with a double-elimination bracket that features the top four seeds from the Southern and Northern MEAC Divisions. The Championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 10 at 1 p.m.
 
The Lady Tigers closed out the regular season with a three-game sweep of South Carolina State this past weekend. The weekend also yielded conference honors for Amanda McDowell (Pitcher of the Week), and Alexis Singleton (Rookie of the Week). (Full Story)
 
McDowell leads the Lady Tigers from the mound with a 14-7 overall record and a 6-2 MEAC record. She has a 3.76 ERA against MEAC teams and leads the conference with 166 strikeouts.
 
The team is batting .290 overall. Destiny Webster (.435), Torrian Wright (.343), Amanda Hallman (.320), Amber Hallman (.307), and Singleton (.306) lead SSU from the plate. Wright leads the MEAC in home runs with 13.
