Softball Sweeps S.C. State; Finishes Second In MEAC Southern Division

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Savannah State softball team sealed up second place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division on Sunday with a three-game series sweep of South Carolina State.

The Lady Tigers end the regular season with a 25-19 overall record and a 9-6 conference record. It is the third consecutive winning season for the program, and the third consecutive winning MEAC season record.

In the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader, freshman Amanda Hallman led SSU to a 3-0 win with 7.0 innings on the mound. She allowed no runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Both teams went scoreless through the first three innings of the opening game. In the fourth, Imani Gayle doubled to left scoring Torrian Wright.

In the sixth. Destiny Webster, running for Wright, stole second and was advanced on a single from India Morgan. She later stole home to lift SSU to a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh, Megan Uhrman doubled to left, scoring Ariona Hagood for the final 3-0 score.

Sophomore Amanda McDowell led the Lady Tigers from the mound in the second win on Saturday.

She pitched a complete 7.0, allowing a single earned run on two hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. McDowell leads the MEAC in strikeouts with 166.

Wright led off for SSU in the second inning with her 13th home run of the season. Wright leads the MEAC and the team in home runs.

SSU took a 2-0 lead later in the inning behind a single from freshman Alexis Singleton that plated Amber Hallman.

S.C. State added a run in the fourth, but SSU answered in the top of the fifth with a single run for a 3-1 lead.

In the seventh, the Lady Tigers sealed up the 8-1 win with five runs on four hits. Singleton, Morgan and Hagood all registered two hits to lead the Lady Tigers from the plate.

On Sunday, SSU went to work early. In the second inning, Singleton tripled to right field, clearing the loaded bases. Earlier in the inning, Wright scored on an error after reaching on a walk.

In the fourth, the Lady Tigers added a single run for a 5-0 lead. S.C. State plated two runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Into the seventh, SSU lead 6-4. Antonette Smith singled to center, scoring Amb. Hallman for the final 7-4 score. Morgan, Hagood and Smith all had two hits in the win.

Ama. Hallman picked up her 11th win on the mound after 5.0 innings of work. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

McDowell came in relief to pick up her first save of the season. She allowed no hits in 2.0 innings in the circle with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers, unofficially, will enter the MEAC Championship Tournament as the second seed out of the Southern Division, behind the 11-2 Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. Cookman clinched the title on Saturday with a win over Florida A&M.
