ATHENS, Ga. – The Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams continued the latter portion of the 2014 season with a visit to nearby Athens for the annual University of Georgia Invitational.
The Tigers fielded seven athletes in six events this past Saturday, in an attempt to qualify for the 2014 NCAA Regional Preliminary Championships on May 29.
The Savannah State track and field program has qualified members for the NCAA Regionals every year since the school elevated to NCAA Division I (2002-03).
On Saturday,
Kenshard Hamilton ran a 10.43, finishing second, in the men's 100 meter dash. In the 200m,
Justin Leggett finished ninth with a time of 21.78, while Hamilton ran a 21.91 for 14
th place.
In the 400m dash,
Antwuan Poole finished fifth with a time of 48.97.
Cameron Hall ran an 18.91 in the 110m hurdles to finish 15
th.
Dolphurs Hayes led the Tigers in the field, finishing 11
th in the pole vault competition with a distance of 4.45m (14' 7.25").
Timothy Jackson finished 13
th in the same event with a vault of 4.30m (14' 1.25").
SSU junior
Asia Stinson represented the Lady Tigers on Saturday. Stinson ran an 11.75 in the 100 meter dash, finishing in sixth place.
The top 48 student-athletes in the individual competitions and the top 24 relay teams will be accepted into the NCAA Regionals (divided by east and west sites). The final qualification list will be announced on Thursday, May 22, 2014.
The Tigers will compete in one more event, the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 16, before the qualifications are announced.
