Softball Claims Victory In MEAC Series Against NCCU

DURHAM, N.C. – The Lady Tigers came out victorious in their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road test this weekend.

SSU beat North Carolina Central 2-1 in a three-game series at Parkwood Field in Durham, North Carolina.  

The Lady Tigers are 19-16 overall and 3-3 in the MEAC. They sit in third place behind the 5-0 Bethune-Cookman Wildcats and North Carolina A&T State Lady Aggies.
Savannah State swept a doubleheader on Saturday to open the series, but fell in the final game on Sunday.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Lady Tigers busted the first game open. Trailing 1-2, SSU platted four runs on four hits.

Newcomer Kylie Tierce plated two runs on a double, and was later scored on a single from Alexis Singleton. Tierce leads the Lady Tigers in doubles with 11 this season. Amber Hallman also scored India Morgan on a single.

The Lady Eagles plated one more run in the fifth, but were unable to respond to the big fourth inning from SSU. The Lady Tigers racked up nine hits in the 5-3 win.

Amanda Hallman recorded her ninth pitching win of the season after 7.0 innings of work. She allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Destiny Webster broke a stalemate in the second inning of the second game with single up the middle, scoring both of the Hallman sisters. SSU added two more runs in third behind home runs from Morgan and Torrian Wright.

Wright leads the Lady Tigers and the MEAC in home runs with 12. She was named MEAC Preseason Player of the Year early last week.

NCCU plated a single run in the third inning. SSU added two more in the top of the fifth behind a two-run home run from Amanda McDowell, lifting the Lady Tigers to a 6-1 advantage.

McDowell pitched a stellar five innings to open the game. Ama. Hallman came in relief at the top of the sixth, but struggled against the Lady Eagles. NCCU racked up four runs on two hits, and loaded the bases with two outs. McDowell re-entered the game and ended the sixth with a strikeout.

She earned her 10th win of the season with two strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh, to seal up a 6-5 victory for SSU.

McDowell pitched 6.1 innings with a remarkable 10 strikeouts. She allowed only one earned run on five hits. McDowell and Ama. Hallman are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in strikeouts in the MEAC. They've combined for 215 strikeouts this season.

Savannah State racked up 11 hits in the win. The Hallman's and McDowell each recorded two hits to lead the Lady Tigers from the plate.

NCCU plated three runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning for a 5-0 lead into the third inning of Sunday's game.

The Lady Tigers were unable to respond, going scoreless through the first five innings. In the top of the sixth Amb. Hallman singled, platting Aaliyah Jones, who was running for Wright.

The Lady Eagles scored a single run in the bottom of the inning for a 6-1 lead into the final inning. Wright singled to score Ariona Hagood, who was running for Megan Uhrman. Morgan scored on an error after reaching on a single.

The two run, three hit inning was not enough for SSU to overcome the deficient, as NCCU picked up their first MEAC win with a 6-3 score.

Londo Booker garnered her third pitching win of the season after 7.0 innings of work. She allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts.

SSU returns home to face the undefeated N.C. A&T Lady Aggies on April 12. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on the Tiger Softball Field.

The three-game series with the Lady Aggies will be more than a MEAC showdown. SSU head coach Jose Gonzalez will face off against former assistant coach Kenya Peters for the first time. Peters was named the Lady Aggies head coach in September of last year.
