Softball Avoids The Sweep

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Savannah State softball garnered a key win in the final game of the three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series with Southern Division rivals Bethune-Cookman this past weekend in Daytona Beach, Florida.

After dropping a doubleheader on Saturday (2-3 and 1-5), the Lady Tigers beat the Wildcats 9-6 on Sunday. SSU improved to 22-19 on the year, and 6-6 in conference play.

Savannah State is in third place in the MEAC Southern Division behind 7-4 Florida A&M, and 10-2 Cookman.

The Lady Tigers put up a single run in the first inning of Sunday's game, but Cookman fired back with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Amanda Hallman blasted a solo homer, India Morgan doubled, and Amber Hallman singled to rack up three runs in the top of the third for SSU. The Lady Wildcats answered in the bottom of the same inning with two runs for a 5-4 lead.

Unfazed, the Lady Tigers fired back in the fourth. Megan Uhrman singled to plate Ariona Hagood. Later, the Lady Tigers took advantage of a Cookman error to plate two more runs for a 7-5 lead. B-CU plated a single run in the bottom of the fourth to cut SSU's lead to 7-6.

Teams went scoreless through the fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, SSU solidified the win with two runs on Cookman errors.

Amanda McDowell pitched a complete game, allowing six earned runs on six hits, with eight walks and five strikeouts. She garnered her 13th pitching win of the season.

The Lady Tigers racked up 10 hits in the win. Alexis Singleton and Ama. Hallman led SSU with two hits apiece.

In the opening game of the series on Saturday, SSU led 2-0 into the top of the third. Cookman plated single runs in the third and fifth to knot the game up.

SSU stranded the go-ahead run in the seventh. A sacrifice fly out from Cookman plated the winning run for the home team.

The Lady Tigers managed only a single run in the second game on Saturday, as Cookman spread out five runs on 10 hits over seven complete innings.

SSU will play the final three-game MEAC series of the regular season this coming weekend at South Carolina State in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

The MEAC Championship Tournament is scheduled for May 8-10 in Ormond Beach, Fla.
