Kalu Leads Women’s Basketball Past NCCU, Into Record Books

DURHAM, N.C. – Savannah State senior Ezinne Kalu scored 25 points to lead the Lady Tigers past North Carolina Central, 74-50, Monday evening in Durham, North Carolina in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game.

SSU improved its overall record to 16-13 with the win, solidifying the 2013-14 Lady Tigers as the winningest team in the program's Division I era. They broke the previous record of 15-11 set by the 2010-11 team. It's the best season record since the 1994-95 team went 21-5.

Kalu's 25 improved her career scoring record to 1,542 points. She is the first female basketball player at Savannah State to break the 1,000 and 1,500 career points mark in the program's Division I era.

The Lady Tigers improved their conference mark to 9-6. They are in 4th place in the MEAC standings. SSU has one remaining regular season game before the MEAC Championship March 10-15 in Norfolk, Virginia. They play South Carolina State in Tiger Arena on Thursday.

Freshman Tiyonda Davis joined Kalu in double-digits with 16 points. The Lady Tigers shot 55.4 percent from the floor and 78.6 percent from the charity strip against North Carolina Central.

Kalu opened the game with a 3-pointer as SSU went up 7-3 in the first three minutes. The Lady Eagles bounced back in the subsequent two minutes to take a 13-9 lead. Kalu lifted SSU to a 19-18 lead with 8:56 on the clock with two good free-throws.

The good free-throws sparked a 14-3 run for SSU in the final minutes of the first half. Davis sank a good free-throw with 11 seconds to play, sending the Lady Tigers into the locker room with a 31-21 lead.

Teams traded points in the opening five minutes of the second half before SSU broke away with an 8-2 run to take a 53-38 lead with 10:13 remaining.

SSU kept the offense rolling behind four straight free-throws from Kalu for an 18-point lead, 57-39, with 8:39 to play. Jasmine Kirkland sank a short jumper with 6:20 to play for SSU's largest lead of the game, 64-39.

The Lady Eagles were unable to contain SSU in the second half, as the Lady Tigers poured in 43 points to NCCU's 29. SSU shot 54.4 percent in the second half.

Bria Dorsey added 9 points for the Lady Tigers, while Kirkland and Kenyata Hendrix tacked on six points apiece. Kirkland led SSU in rebounds with seven.

Tipoff in Tiger Arena on Thursday is set for 6 p.m. Five Lady Tigers will be honored in pregame Senior Day ceremonies.
