Softball Drops MEAC Series To FAMU

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Lady Tigers opened Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this weekend with a three-game series against Southern Division rival's Florida A&M.

SSU won the first game on Saturday in five innings, but dropped both games of a doubleheader on Sunday, falling 1-2 in the series.

The Lady Tigers are 17-15 after the weekend and 1-2 in the MEAC. FAMU improved to 12-19 and 2-1 in conference.

In the opening game on Friday, FAMU struck first with a single run on two hits. SSU responded in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Torrian Wright hit her 11th home run of the season, scoring India Morgan to give the Lady Tigers a 2-1 advantage.

The score held through the middle three innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Tigers platted four runs on three hits for a 6-1 lead. Amanda Hallman ended the game early with a 3-run home run for a 9-1 mercy rule win.

McDowell picked up her ninth pitching win of the season after 5.0 innings of work. She allowed one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and seven walks.

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, SSU answered Florida A&M's two runs in the opening inning with four runs on two hits in the bottom of the first.

The Lady Rattlers knotted the game up in the top of the second with two runs on a costly SSU error. Amber Hallman singled to left, scoring Morgan in the bottom of the second to give SSU a 5-4 lead.

SSU maintained their lead through the third and fourth innings. FAMU took the lead in the fifth behind two walked in runs and no hits for a 6-5 advantage.

The Lady Tigers were unable to respond, stranding a single runner in the final three innings. FAMU tacked on one run in the seventh for the final 7-5 score.

Kenya Pererira garnered her first pitching win for the Lady Rattlers. She completed 6.1 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts.

FAMU spread out 14 hits, platting 15 runs, in five innings of game two for a mercy rule win. SSU scored only one run, on five hits.

Ashleigh Minter was tagged with her seventh win. In 5.0 innings of work, she allowed one run (no earned) on five hits with two strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers travel to North Carolina this weekend for a three-game series with North Carolina Central University. SSU and NCCU will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 5, and a single game on Sunday, April 6.
