Softball Drops Two In War Eagle Classic

AUBURN, Ala. – After splitting two games on day one, the Lady Tigers fell to Radford University and host Auburn University at the 2014 War Eagle Softball Classic on Saturday.

In the opening game against Radford, the Lady Tigers put up three runs in the top of the third. India Morgan tripled, platting Megan Uhrman and Alexis Singleton. Amber Hallman doubled scoring Morgan to lift SSU to a 3-1 lead.

Radford scored single runs in the bottom of the 3rd and 4th to tie the game up into the 5th inning. In the bottom of the 5th, Radford took the lead behind a 3-run homer from Summer Robinson.

SSU stranded two runners in the top of the 7th, falling 3-6 to Radford.  Amb. Hallman led the Lady Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-4. Amanda McDowell was tagged with her 5th loss of the season after a full 6.0 innings of work. She allowed 6 earned runs on 5 hits with 7 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Abby Morrow garnered the pitching win after 4.1 innings of work. She allowed no runs on 1 hit with 9 strikeouts.

Auburn routed SSU in the nightcap, platting 22 runs on 19 hits in a five-inning game. Marcy Harper pitched a no-hitter against the Lady Tigers with 6 strikeouts.

SSU falls to 11-12 on the season. The Lady Tigers were scheduled to play Ball State on Sunday. However, the final day of the Classic was cancelled due to inclement weather in Auburn. The game will not be made up.

The Lady Tigers return home for a 9-game stretch. They open the longest home stand this season against Maryland Eastern Shore on March 18. First pitch in the twinbill is set for 1 p.m.

SSU opens Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play on March 29 against Florida A&M. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
