Softball Sweeps Twinbill With Fort Valley

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Lady Tigers swept a doubleheader with Fort Valley State on Tuesday in Savannah, winning 8-4 and 8-1, to improve to 10-9 on the season.

SSU was led by stellar pitching from freshman Amanda Hallman and sophomore Amanda McDowell.

In the day's opening game, Hallman picked up her 5th win of the season with a season-high 16 strikeouts. She allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits in a complete 7.0 innings of work.

McDowell followed Hallman in kind with a complete game in the circle, 8 strikeouts and 1 run (no earned) on 2 hits with 6 walks.

The Lady Tigers did damage at the plate as well. In the opening game, SSU spread out 15 hits over 6 innings. Antonette Smith led the team going 4-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBI, including two doubles.

SSU newcomer Kelsey Swinson went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. Amber Hallman had two doubles on three at bats on the day. Destiny Webster and Alexis Singleton each went 2-for-4 as well.

The Lady Tigers spread out 12 hits in six innings in game two. McDowell and Ariona Hagood each went 2-for-3 at the plate. McDowell had two doubles and Torrian Wright recorded her 5th home run of the season.

Alexis Ricks garnered pitching losses in both games. She allowed 8 runs (7 earned) on 15 hits in the first game with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. In game two, she again allowed 8 runs (7 earned) on 12 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.

SSU is led at the plate by McDowell on the season. She is batting a .357 with 15 hits, and 12 RBI, including 15 doubles. Smith is batting .333 and leads the team in hits with 23. Wright leads the team in homers, while Kylie Tierce leads in doubles with seven.

McDowell also leads the team from the mound with a 5.14 ERA. She has a 5-3 overall record after 63.0 innings pitched and 55 strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers continue the nonconference portion of the 2014 season with their final tournament before the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schedule opens.

SSU is slated to face Alabama A&M, Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne, Radford, Auburn and Ball State in the Auburn Tournament beginning March 14.
