Women’s Basketball Drops Road Game To Aggies

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Savannah State came out strong on Saturday against the No. 2 (MEAC) North Carolina A&T State Lady Aggies, but faltered in the second half, as the Aggies sealed up a 73-61 victory in Corbett Sports Center.

A mere seven seconds into the game, SSU newcomer Bria Dorsey escaped into Aggie territory alone for a layup and a 2-0 Lady Tiger lead. Dorsey ended up with 11 points on the night.

The Aggies Tracey King and Christina Carter answered the quick SSU points with five of their own. SSU senior Ezinne Kalu and Dorsey responded with five as well to lift the Lady Tigers to a 7-5 lead three minutes into the game. Kalu led the Lady Tigers on the night with 12 points.

April McRae knotted the game up at seven with two good free-throws a minute later. McRae led the field with 18 points on the night. She went 10-for-14 from the charity strip on the night and 4-for-7 from the field. SSU recorded a season-high 32 personal fouls on the night.

With 10:33 to play in the first half, McRae tied the game up for the third time, at 15 all. The Aggies opened a 7-0 run behind McRae for a 20-15 lead with 8:29 to play.

The Lady Tigers responded with points from freshman Tiyonda Davis and Dorsey to tie the game up for the fourth time, at 23 all, with 5:17 remaining. Davis ended up with nine points for the Lady Tigers on the night.

In the waning minutes of the opening half, the Aggies pushed out to a 37-25 lead behind a 10-0 run. Carter capped the run with a good free-throw with 1:13 to play.

Jasmine Kirkland finished off the first half with the final four points. Kirkland finished an old fashioned 3-point play and sank a free-throw with 16 seconds left to send SSU to the locker room down 29-37.

SSU was charged with an incredible 17 personal fouls in the first half. They shot under 33 percent from the field. The Aggies shot 41.7 percent from the field.

NCAT went up by 14 points in the opening five minutes of the second half. Ariel Bursey sank a free-throw for a 49-35 Aggies advantage with 14:57 on the clock.

The Aggies maintained their double-digit lead through most of the half, going up by as much as 16 points.

With 4:27 to play, Chantrell Frazier opened a 10-0 run for the Lady Tigers with a good free-throw. Kalu followed with six points and Kenyata Hendrix capped the run with a good 3-pointer with 1:42 to play. SSU cut the Aggies lead to 67-61 with the run.

NCAT responded with a 7-0 run to regain a double-digit spread. All seven points were scored from the free-throw line. Carter sank the final basket from the charity strip to seal up the Aggies 22nd win of the season.

SSU falls to 15-13 overall and 8-6 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play. They remain in fourth place in the conference standings, tied with Florida A&M.

The 22-4 Aggies improved to 12-2 in the conference and will hold steady in second place behind the 15-0 Hampton Lady Pirates.

The Lady Tigers continue the regular season with a visit to North Carolina Central on Monday, March 3. They concluded the season in Tiger Arena against South Carolina State on March 6, before the MEAC Championship March 10-15 in Norfolk, Virginia.
