Softball Takes Two In Tiny Laster Tournament

IRONDALE, Ala. – Savannah State opened the 2014 HBCU Classic Tiny Laster Tournament in Irondale, Alabama with two wins over Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) teams Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State.

The annual softball tournament pits the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) against the SWAC over two days in Alabama. The MEAC and SWAC are the only two NCAA Division I HBCU conferences.

In the opening game, SSU downed Alabama State 8-2 behind a stellar outing from sophomore pitcher Amanda McDowell. She picked up her third win of the season after 7.0 innings of work. McDowell allowed 2 earned runs on 1 hit with 7 strikeouts and 5 walks.

After each team platted a single run in the first inning, SSU took the lead in the bottom of the second. Megan Uhrman hit a sacrifice fly to right field, platting Kylie Tierce, who walked.

The Lady Hornets knotted the game up in the top of the third behind a home run from Meagan Dixon. SSU answered in the bottom of the inning. McDowell doubled, scoring Tierce and Torrian Wright, who each singled to reach. The Lady Tigers took a 4-2 lead into the middle innings.

Teams went scoreless through the 4th and 5th innings. In the bottom of the 6th, SSU racked up 4 runs on 4 hits, including a triple from Alexis Singleton, a double from Antonette Smith, a single from Uhrman and a homer from Wright.

The Lady Tigers held out for the win as McDowell escaped the top of the 7th, stranding two Alabama State runners with a strikeout and forced fly out.

SSU amassed 13 hits in the game and were led at the plate by Smith, Wright, McDowell and Singleton, who each registered two hits.

Melissa Christmann was tagged with the pitching loss after 6.0 innings in the circle. She allowed 8 earned runs on 13 hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Following McDowell's lead, freshman Amanda Hallman led the Lady Tigers with an outstanding effort from the circle in the second game. Ama. Hallman pitched a full 7.0 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 6 hits with 4 walks and a season and career-high 12 strikeouts.

Teams opened the game with two scoreless innings. Each platted a single run in the third inning. The game went scoreless through the middle innings.

In the bottom of the 6th, the Lady Tigers broke the stalemate. Wright led off with a double. Amber Hallman platted Destiny Webster, running for Wright with single. The Lady Tigers followed Hallman up with four more hits and three runs to take a 4-1 lead. The score would hold.

In the top of the 7th inning Ama. Hallman recorded her final two strikeouts to give SSU their sixth win of the season and record her third pitching win.

Smith led the Lady Tigers from the plate with three hits. She leads the team in hits so far this season with 17. Ama. Hallman is close behind with 15 hits. The team is batting a .275 overall.

The Lady Tigers are 6-9 overall on the season. They face off against Grambling State and Alabama A&M on Sunday to close out the tournament.
