Softball Splits Twinbill With Brenau

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Lady Tigers broke an eight game losing streak on Tuesday with a 6-3 victory over Brenau University in the second game of a doubleheader on the Tiger Softball Field, after falling 1-14 in the first game.

Sophomore Amanda McDowell pitched a stellar 7.0 innings for the Lady Tigers in game two. She allowed 3 runs (no earned) on 3 hits with 3 walks and 9 strikeouts. McDowell improved to 2-2 on the season.

After a scoreless first inning, India Morgan was platted on a Brenau error after reaching on a fielder's choice. Antonette Smith singled to short, scoring Kylie Tierce. Megan Urhman blasted a single to shallow right, scoring Singleton and McDowell to lift SSU to a 4-0 lead.

Teams went scoreless through the third. In the top of the fourth, Machenzie Oliver scored on an SSU error after being walked, and Cheyenne Marsh scored on an SSU throwing error. Later in the inning, Katherine Cole singled to left, platting Landon Farrow, who was pinch running for Elizabeth Schneider.

McDowell forced a pop up to get SSU out of the inning with the tying run on base. The Lady Tigers held a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Lady Tigers stranded two runners on a single hit in the bottom of the fourth. Brenau again put the tying run on base in the top of the fifth, but were unable to score, as McDowell struck out Oliver to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Torrian Wright led off for SSU with her second home run of the 2014 season. Wright led the Lady Tigers and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with 16 homers in her freshman season.

Later in the inning, McDowell singled up the middle, platting Morgan who was hit with a pitch. The two runs solidified the win for SSU as McDowell went to work in the next two innings, recording three more strikeouts to end the game in the top of the seventh.

Wright led the Lady Tigers from the plate, going 2-for-2. SSU spread out six hits over the seven innings. Brenau was led by Schneider, who went 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI.

Jenny Willis was tagged with her first loss of the season after 2.2 innings of work from the mound. She allowed 4 runs (no earned) on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, Brenau spread out 14 runs on 15 hits over five innings. In the top of the fourth, the Golden Tigers platted 10 runs on 10 hits to help seal up their seventh straight win of the season.

Jenny Shepherd picked up her fifth pitching win of the season after 3.0 innings in the circle. She allowed no hits with 6 strikeouts.

Amanda Hallman was tagged with her sixth loss, allowing 14 earned runs on 15 hits with 6 walks and 5 strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers are 4-9 overall this season. They travel to Birmingham, Alabama this weekend for the Tiny Laster Tournament. The HBCU classic will see SSU play Alabama State, Mississippi Valley State, Grambling State and Alabama A&M.
