Softball Drops Two In Jacksonville Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In a weather shortened tournament, the Lady Tigers dropped two road games in the 2014 Jacksonville University softball tournament this past weekend.

Originally, a four game tournament, inclement weather in the Jacksonville area forced a cancelation of all games on Sunday. The Lady Tigers fell to Mount St. Mary's 6-9 in the opening game on Saturday, and dropped the second game 1-13 to the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In the opening game, Mount St. Mary's extended a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning behind two hits. The Lady Tigers dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning behind an RBI single from Antonette Smith.  

Scoreless through the middle innings, SSU knotted the game up in the bottom of the 7th. Torrian Wright singled to score Kelsey Swinson, who walked. Amber Hallman doubled to left, platting India Morgan who reached on an error.

Into extra innings, the fight continued for both teams. The Mountaineers added a run in the top of the 8th for a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the 8th, Kylie Tierce doubled to center field, platting Amanda Hallman, who was placed on second, tying the game at 4 runs apiece. SSU stranded the go ahead run to send the game into 9 innings.

In the top of the 9th, the Mountaineers racked up 5 runs on a single hit. Cat Clifford doubled to right, scoring two of the runs.  

Morgan singled to centerfield in the bottom of the 9th, scoring Smith. Morgan was platted on a pop out from Amb. Hallman, but the Lady Tigers were unable to respond to all five runs.

Amanda McDowell pitched 8.1 innings for SSU, allowing 8 runs (5 earned) on 2 hits with 7 strikeouts and 8 walks. She was tagged with her third loss of the season. Morgan led the Lady Tigers from the plate with two hits and an RBI.

Sam Lichtner picked up her first win of the season after 5.0 innings of work. She allowed 5 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks.

In the Lady Tigers second game on Saturday, the UI-Chicago Lady Flames spread out 13 runs on 11 hits over five innings. The Lady Flames put up nine runs up in the bottom of the first inning. SSU responded with a single run in the top of the second.

Ama. Hallman was tagged with her fifth pitching loss of the season after 4.0 innings of work. She allowed 13 earned runs on 11 hits with five walks and a single strikeout.

Bridget Boyle garnered her first pitching win after 5.0 innings in the circle. She allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers return home for a twinbill with Brenau University on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on the Tiger Softball Field.
