Late Push Rallies SSU Past Cougars

Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State scored three times in the eighth inning and went on to defeat Chicago State 7-5 at Tiger Field.
 
Entering the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers trailed 5-4.
 
Lee Moore led off with his second double of the game and scored the tying run following a single by Marcus Wojtkowicz. Kevin Herlihy singled and Hector Benitez, who was pinch running for Wojtkowicz, advanced to second. Aaron Hoffer entered the game as a pinch hitter for Devin Jackson and hit a single that allowed Benitez to score the go ahead run. After Mendez Elder struck out, Todd Hagen singled to the shortstop which allowed Herlihy to cross home plate for a 7-5 lead.
 
The Cougars could only muster one hit in the ninth.
 
CSU (1-5) scored twice in the top of the first but Savannah State answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning when Charles Sikes singled and scored on a double by David Richards.
 
The Cougars went ahead 3-1 in the third but SSU made it a 3-2 game in the fourth when Herlihy's sacrifice fly sent home Moore who led off with a double.
 
Chicago State went ahead 4-2 after scoring a run in the top of the fifth.
 
The Tigers scored two runs off three hits in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game at 4-4.
 
Hagen doubled and scored off a single by Sikes and Sikes later scored off a single by Zachary Brigham.
 
CSU added a run in the top of the eighth to go ahead 5-4.
 
Both squads had 12 hits while SSU had one error and the Cougars made one.
 
Chicago State stranded 10 runners on base while the Tigers left seven on base.
 
Hagen, Sikes and Moore each had two hits for Savannah State (3-4) while Sikes and Moore scored twice.
 
Reliever Eric Ricks got the win after pitching 1.2 innings and giving up one hit and no runs.
 
Jordan Stroschein drove in three runs for CSU while Chase Matheson had three hits. Andrew Wellwerts took the loss. Wellwerts pitched seven innings and gave up 10 hits and seven runs.
