TUSKEGEE, Ala.- Tuskegee avoided being swept by Savannah State with a 14-8 win over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Washington Field.
SSU held a 8-7 lead after six innings of play but surrendered seven runs in the final three innings.
Savannah State had 13 hits in the game but committed four errors while leaving 11 runners on base.
The Tigers scored three times in the top of the second inning with
Chandler Hicks hitting a solo home run and
Jason Ramos and
Hakem Smith both hitting RBI singles.
Tuskegee answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
A solo home run by
Tyler Tucker tied the game in the top of the third but the Golden Tigers added a run in the bottom of the third to give Tuskegee a 5-4 advantage.
A two-run single by Ramos gave SSU a 6-5 lead in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Savannah State extended their margin with Smith scoring when Tucker hit into a double play and
Johan Sandoval coming home on a wild pitch for a 8-5 advantage.
The rest of the scoring in the contest was done by Tuskegee as they scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and then added three runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth to pull away.
Ramos ended the day going 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI while scoring a run. Smith had three hits, Hicks and
Kidane Stephens both had two hits and Tucker drove in two runs and scored twice.
Gregorio Gonzalez struck out 11 in his 6.1 innings but he also charged with giving up eight hits and seven unearned runs. Other pitchers who saw action on the mound were
Noah Brown,
Noah Lester,
Kijani Clarington and
Joshua Krutchik.
Savannah State (18-16, 15-9 SIAC) will host Edward Waters on April 10 at 3 p.m. at Tiger Field.
