SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State sliced a five-run deficit to two but could not get any closer as the Tigers dropped a 10-7 decision to South Carolina Beaufort on Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field.
The non-conference setback snaps SSU's three game win streak as their overall record dips to 16-15.
The Sand Sharks scored three times in the first inning, but Savannah State answered with a run in the bottom of the second when
Jason Ramos' bases loaded groundout to the second baseman allowed
Tyler Tucker to score.
USCB added three more runs in the top of the third to go in front by five but a solo home run by
Noah Rodriguez over the center field fence and sacrifice fly by Tucker that scored
Johan Sandoval, who was on third base after hitting a triple, cut SSU's deficit to 6-3.
The Sand Sharks scored again in the fourth and fifth innings to run their lead to 8-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, SSU sent three runners across home plate on four hits.
Kidane Stephens and
Kijani Clarington both hit singles and
David Sanders drew a walk to load the bases for
Chandler Hicks who responded with a single to left field that sent home Stephens and Clarington. A walk to Ramos re-loaded the bases for
Julian Grier whose single to left field allowed Sanders to score to draw the Tigers within 8-6.
In the top of the seventh, USCB scored on a wild pitch and in the bottom half of the inning, Stephens drew a walk and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Sand Sharks added the final run of the day in the top of the eighth.
Savannah State finished the game with eight hits while making four errors.
Rodríguez hit a home run for the Tigers while Sandoval hit a triple and Tucker managed a double. Tucker ended the day with two hits and Stephens scored twice.
The Tigers used five pitchers in the game.
Evan Coartney got the start but only lasted one inning.
Noah Brown pitched the next two innings followed by
Bynton Edge (one inning),
Adonis Perez (three innings) and
Joshua Krutchik (two innings). Coartney, Brown and Edge struck out one batter apiece while Perez and Krutchik both had two strikeouts.
Savannah State and USCB will meet again on April 14 in Bluffton, South Carolina but before then, the Tigers have conference tilts at Tuskegee (April 3-4) and at home with Edward Waters (April 10-11).
