Women’s Basketball Drops Road Game To S.C. State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – In a last minute thriller, the Lady Tigers dropped an important road game to South Carolina State, 62-66, on Saturday in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

With 3:18 to play, SSU's Jasmine Kirkland sank a layup to tie the game for the fourth time at 58 all. Bria Dorsey lifted the Lady Tigers to their final lead of the game at the 2:50 mark with a layup.

S.C. State's Mykata Jones hit a 3-pointer 20 seconds later to give the home team a 61-60 lead with 2:32 on the clock. The Lady Bulldogs held onto their lead in the final minutes despite a layup from Kenyata Hendrix that put SSU within two points of S.C. State's lead.  

The Lady Bulldog's Cabriel Duran sank two free-throws with 2 seconds to play for the final four-point margin.

Savannah State falls to 15-12 on the season and 8-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Lady Bulldogs improved to 7-16 overall and 5-8 in the conference.

Four Lady Tigers closed out the night in double-digits. Hendrix and junior Jasmine Norman led SSU with 16 points apiece. Senior Ezinne Kalu added 13, and Dorsey scored 10.

Duren led the Lady Bulldogs and the field with 23 points. Jones followed her with 15 points.

S.C. State opened the game with a 4-0 run, that SSU quickly answered. Dorsey knotted the game up with 16:04 to play, and opened a 4-0 run for the Lady Tigers.

Hendrix drained a 3-pointer with 14:19 to play, lifting SSU to their largest lead of the game, 13-8.

The Lady Bulldogs responded with an 11-0 run to go up 19-13 with 9:40 to play in the opening half. SSU was unable to answer the offensive spurt in the subsequent minutes as S.C. State extended to their largest lead of the game, 32-19, in the following five minutes.

With 4:30 on the clock, Dorsey opened an 8-0 run for the Lady Tigers to close out the first half. S.C. State led 32-29 at the halfway mark.

Five minutes into the second half, the Lady Bulldogs jumped back out to a double-digit lead, 43-33, behind two good free-throws from Duren.

SSU cut into that lead with five points from Hendrix and three from Kalu. With 12:34 to play, S.C. State held a 46-42 advantage.
The Lady Tigers shot 38.4 percent from the floor, but hit 14-of-20 attempts (70 percent) from the charity strip on the evening.
S.C. State shot 41.4 percent from the floor and 78.9 percent from the free-throw line. S.C. State outrebounded SSU 39-34.

SSU has three games remaining in the 2013-14 season. They travel to North Carolina to play North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central this coming weekend, before returning home for the final game of the season. The Lady Tigers host S.C. State in Tiger Arena on March 6 to close out the season.
