Aggies Surge Past Women’s Basketball

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The North Carolina A&T State Aggies pulled away in the second half from Savannah State in a pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest on Saturday, handing SSU only their second loss in Tiger Arena with a 75-61 final score.

The Lady Tigers fall to 14-11 overall and 7-4 in the MEAC. The Aggies improved to 19-4 and 9-2 in conference. A&T maintains their second place standing in the MEAC. SSU remains 4th in the conference.

Four Lady Tigers recorded double-digit marks in the loss. Senior Ezinne Kalu led with 14 points, while Jasmine Norman tacked on13, Tiyonda Davis put up 11 and Jasmine Kirkland scored 10.

The visitors came out strong with a 13-4 run in the opening six minutes. Tracey King drained a 3-pointer with 14:03 on the clock to lift A&T to the nine point lead.

SSU opened a 6-0 run in the subsequent three minutes that was capped with two good free-throws from Davis to cut the Aggies lead to 13-10.

A&T pushed back out to a five point lead, but behind an old-fashioned 3-point play from Davis and a layup from Kenyata Hendrix, SSU tied the game up a 19 with 7:21 to play.

With 6:08 to play, SSU got their first lead of the game behind a layup from Kalu. The Aggies responded with an 8-0 run to regain the advantage.

A&T's April McRae scored a layup with 2:55 to play in the first half, lifting the visitors to a 29-23 lead. SSU responded with a 6-1 run to cut the Aggies lead to one points, 30-29, with 43 seconds to play.

Airel Bursey scored the final points of the first half to send the Aggies into the locker room with a 32-29 lead.

The Aggies opened the second half with a 12-4 run in the first five minutes. Eboni Ross scored in the paint to give A&T a 44-33 lead with 14:41 showing.

Hendrix sank two good free-throws with 12:22 showing to get SSU within seven points of the visitors lead. It would be the closest SSU came to overcoming the Aggies. Bursey sank two from the charity strip two minutes later to give A&T a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.

King led the Aggies with 19 points. Debbie Smith added 12 points, while Christina Carter tacked on 11. Both teams shot under 50 percent in the contest.

SSU plays their second to last home contest on Monday against North Carolina Central. They head on the road for a three-game stretch, before playing their final game of the regular season in Tiger Arena against South Carolina State on March 6.
