Softball Closes Out Osprey Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Lady Tigers closed out the 2014 Osprey Invitational, hosted by the University of North Florida, with three losses to Ohio University, Troy University and Southern Illinois on Saturday and Sunday.

SSU played Ohio University in Saturday's opening game. The Lady Tigers fell in extra innings, 3-2, after a pitching battle held both teams to a single run through six innings.

The Lady Tigers outhit Ohio 7-2 in the contest, but committed four costly errors. Sophomore Amanda McDowell concluded 7.0 innings in the circle with 3 runs (no earned) on only 2 hits with 4 strikeouts. She was tagged with her second loss of the season.

Savannah Jo Dorsey picked up her fourth pitching win for Ohio after only a single inning of work. Lauren McClary got the no decision after 7.0 innings of work. She allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits with 5 strikeouts.

SSU broke a scoreless game in the top of the second inning. Antonette Smith singled up the middle, scoring Amber Hallman, who reached on a single. Ohio responded in the bottom of the third with a single run behind two SSU errors.

Tied at one run apiece into the top of the 7th, SSU newcomer Kylie Tierce was plated on a single from Kelsey Swinson after reaching on an infield single to lift SSU to a 2-1 lead.

Eyeing the win, SSU held the lead into the bottom of the 7th. An SSU throwing error scored Dakota Pyles to send the game into extra innings.

SSU failed to plate any runs in the top of the 8th as Ohio's Alexandria Basquez hit a sacrifice fly to score Erin Lashley for the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

Tierce led the Lady Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-4. Basquez, Gebele and Pyles each recorded one hit for Ohio.

In the Lady Tigers second game on Saturday, Troy University spread out 17 runs on 12 hits over a five inning contest. SSU held Troy's Rachel Rigney from a no-hitter behind a single from Swinson in the third.

Rigney pitched all five innings, allowing 1 hit with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Amanda Hallman garnered her third pitching loss after 3.1 innings of work. She allowed 8 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits with 1 strikeout.

In the Lady Tigers final game of the tournament on Sunday, and a rematch with Southern Illinois, SSU plated four runs in the third for a 4-3 lead, but were overwhelmed by strong fifth and sixth innings from SIU, falling 5-7.

Smith and Swinson led the Lady Tigers with two hits apiece. Ama. Hallman was tagged with the pitching loss after a full 6.0 innings of work. She allowed 7 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Alyssa Wunderlich pitched a clean final 3.0 innings for SIU, picking up her second win of the season. She allowed no runs and no hits with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.

SSU continues the 2014 season with the Jacksonville Tournament, scheduled for February 21-23. The Lady Tigers will face Southern Illinois again, the University of Illinois-Chicago, Mount Saint Mary's and host Jacksonville University.
