Softball Wins Three In Opening Tournament

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Lady Tigers opened a new season as host to the 2014 SSU Softball Tournament on the Tiger Softball Field in Savannah this past weekend.

SSU went 3-1 in the 10-game tournament that featured Morgan State, South Carolina Beaufort, Brewton-Parker and Thomas University.

The weekend tournament opened with four games on Friday, four games on Saturday and closed with the final two games on Sunday.

SSU opened Friday with a 6-1 win over Morgan State. They were led by true freshman Amanda Hallman who pitched a full 7.0 innings, recording four strikeouts and allowed only one earned run on six hits. Hallman went 3-for-4 from the plate with her first career home run.

Hallman's older sister, SSU third basemen Amber Hallman, went 2-for-2 from the plate with a double and three RBI. India Morgan was 3-for-4 with a double. SSU spread out 11 hits over six innings, platting runs in the middle three innings.

Morgan State's Donna Lara recorded the pitching loss after 2.2 innings of work. She allowed three earned runs on five hits with three walks.

In the Lady Tigers second game against Thomas University on Friday, SSU took an early 3-0 lead behind RBI's from Morgan and Megan Uhrman.

In the fifth, Thomas put three runs up behind a homerun from Aimee Johnson and a double from Summer Rose.

The Lady Tigers broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Amanda Hallman doubled to left and Amanda McDowell plated her on a single to give SSU the 4-3 edge.

In the top of the 7th, McDowell concluded a stellar six inning outing, allowing three earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. Amanda Hallman closed out the inning with a strikeout and a forced groundout to give SSU their second win of the season.

McDowell garnered her first pitching win of the season. At the plate, Antonette Smith and Amanda Hallman both went 2-for-3 to lead SSU. Rose was tagged with the pitching loss after 6.0 innings of work. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.

SSU closed out the tournament with two games against South Carolina Beaufort. The Lady Tigers split the games, falling in Saturday's game 7-9, and downing the Sand Sharks 9-3 in the final game on Sunday.

USCB put up two runs to open the first game on Saturday. SSU responded in the bottom of the second with two runs, behind doubles from McDowell and SSU newcomer Kylie Tierce to tie the game up.

Both teams' went scoreless until the fifth. USCB put up two runs in the top of the inning, and SSU responded with two runs in the bottom.

Tied at four runs apiece into the sixth, the visitors loaded the bases behind a couple SSU errors. Taylor Triplett cleared the bases with a grand slam over the centerfield wall, lifting USCB to an 8-4 lead.  

The Lady Tigers managed only a single run in the bottom of the inning. USCB tacked on one more run in the top of the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th, Tierce doubled again and McDowell walked. Both were plated, but a groundout ended the late rally for the Lady Tigers.

Ashlie Layman was tagged with the pitching win after a complete game in the circle. She allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

McDowell was tagged with the loss after 6.0 innings of work. She allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

Tierce and Smith led the Lady Tigers at the plate with two hits apiece.

In the final game on Sunday, the Lady Tigers opened with a massive first inning. SSU racked up six runs on two hits from Amanda Hallman and Smith.

USCB was unable to respond in the subsequent inning. In the top of the third, the Sand Sharks avoided the shutout with a sacrifice fly out from Alexandria Simmons, platting Sammi Shaffren.

The Lady Tigers tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third behind three hits for a 9-1 lead. USCB scored runs in the 6th and 7th, but were unable to finish rally.

Amanda Hallman garnered her second pitching win of her debut season with a complete game from the mound. She allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Smith and Amanda Hallman led the Lady Tigers from the plate with two hits apiece. SSU racked up seven hits as a team.

The Lady Tigers continue the season with the North Florida Tournament this coming weekend. They are scheduled to play Quinnipiac, Southern Illinois, Troy and North Florida.
