Women’s Basketball Edges By Troy

TROY, Ala. -  Savannah State women's basketball squeezed out an 83-80 win over Troy on Sunday after trailing at the half and curbing off a late surge from the Trojans.

Four Lady Tigers ended up in double-digits in the win. Jasmine Norman led with her third career double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Ezinne Kalu led the field with 24 points. Tiyonda Davis put in 16 points, followed by Bria Dorsey who registered 10.

Troy opened the first half with an 11-4 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from Brianna Lancaster. SSU cut the Trojans lead to 15-9 a couple of minutes later, but the offensive spurt didn't last long as Troy opened a 9-0 run for a 24-9 lead with 12:35 to play.

Trailing by 10 points, 20-30, with 4:31 to play, SSU came alive in the final minutes of the half with a 5-0 run. With 59 seconds on the clock, Kalu drained a 3-pointer to cut Troy's lead to 32-28. Ronita Garrett drained a layup with 40 seconds left, sending Troy to the locker room with a 34-28 advantage.

Seven minutes into the second half, Norman led SSU on a 12-2 run that lifted the Lady Tigers to a 47-42 lead. Norman put in eight of the 12 points in the run.
Troy fired back with four straight points from Ashely Beverly-Kelley to cut SSU's lead to 47-46 with 13:03 to play.

In the middle of the half, teams tied up the game three times before Davis and Dorsey opened 10-2 run, lifting SSU to a 70-62 lead with 7:24 to play.

The Lady Tigers held onto a lead for the subsequent five minutes, but Troy began to etch away at their lead in the final minutes. Troy's Kortney Coleman drained two free-throws with 1:07 to play, cutting SSU's advantage to 78-76.

Norman and Kalu each sank two free-throws to put some distance between SSU and Troy (82-76) with 28 seconds to play.

Garrett and Beverly-Kelley each sank layups in the final seconds, but it wouldn't be enough as SSU sealed up the three-point win with a forced turnover as the clock ran out.

Beverly-Kelley led the Trojans with 22 points, followed by Garrett who scored 21. Coleman recorded 11, and Rachel Reid and Lancaster each had 10 points in the loss.

The Lady Tigers are 3-1 to open the season. SSU improves to 2-0 over Troy in the overall series. The Lady Tigers beat the Trojans 93-84 in the program's first meeting, last year.

The Lady Tigers return to action Dec. 4 in Tiger Arena when they play host to the University of Florida.
