Women’s Basketball Drops First Road Game

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Lady Tigers played their first road game of the 2014-15 season on Sunday against Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent the University of Arkansas.
 
Savannah State, who faces off with a total of four SEC schools this year, fell 46-75 to the Razorbacks. The Lady Tigers are 1-1 to open the season.
 
Sophomore Kenyata Hendrix again led the Lady Tigers in scoring. Hednrix drained five 3-pointers and five field goals for 15 points. After two games, Hendrix leads the team, averaging 19.5 points a game.
 
Fifth year senior Ezinne Kalu followed Hendrix in scoring with 11 points. Jasmine Norman led the team in rebounds with six.
 
The Razorbacks pushed out to a 7-1 lead early in the first half, as SSU struggled with some costly turnovers.
 
Trailing 1-11, Hendrix eased the spread with a good trey at the 14:11 mark of the first half. Moments later, Kalu drained two good free-throws to keep SSU within seven points of Arkansas.
 
Midway through the half, Arkansas extended their lead with a 7-0 run for a 24-10 advantage at the seven minute mark.
 
SSU responded with an 8-0 run that included back-to-back 3-pointers from Hendrix and Kalu. The offensive spurt was short lived however, as the Razorbacks opened an 8-0 run of their own to end the first half with a 34-20 lead.
 
The Razorbacks took control in the opening minutes of the second half, pushing out to a 53-28 lead with 10:16 on the clock. The Lady Tigers, led by Kalu and Hendrix, opened a 7-0 run in the following two minutes that cut Arkansas' lead to 53-35 with 8:23 to play.
 
Down the stretch, Arkansas took their biggest lead of the night behind a 7-0 run that was capped with a good jumper from Khadijah West for the final 29-point spread.  
 
Jessica Jackson led the Razorbacks with 19 points. Melissa Wolff added 14, while Kelsey Brooks tacked on 12 and Katie Powell registered 10.
 
Savannah State returns home for a bout with Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) foe Alabama State. Tipoff in Tiger Arena is set for 6 p.m. on Nov. 20.
