Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Columbia College In Season Opener

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State women's basketball team opened the program's 86th season with a rout of NAIA opponent Columbia College in Tiger Arena on Friday night.

The Lady Tigers rolled to their second triple-digit in 2014, winning 106-60. The last triple-digit win for SSU was against Trinity Baptist College on January 6, when the Lady Tigers won 106-33.

SSU sophomore Kenyata Hendrix led the field with a career-high 24 points. Hendrix went 9-for-17 from the floor and 5-for-10 from beyond the 3-point line. The Lady Tigers shot 55.6 percent from beyond the arch, draining 10-of-18 3-point attempts.

Senior Ezinne Kalu followed Hendrix with 23 points, going 9-for-13 from the field. Joining the two in double-digits was Jasmine Norman with 12 points, and newcomer Jada Young, who recorded 11 on the night.

Young also led the team in rebounds with nine. The Lady Tigers outrebounded the Fighting Koalas 47-39 on the night.

Briana Johnson led Columbia College with 15 points. Kennyatta Gilchrist also reached double-digit numbers, scoring 13 points on the night. She also led the visitors in rebounds with eight.

SSU will switch gears entirely this coming Sunday when they face off with the University of Arkansas in Fayeteville, AR. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. CST tipoff, and will be aired live on the SEC Network Plus, powered by ESPN.com.
