Men’s Golf Wins VSU Fall Classic

PETERSBURG, Va. – The Savannah State men's golf team won the NCAA Division I title at the annual Virginia State Trojan Fall Classic in Petersburg, Virginia this past weekend.  
 
The Tigers combined for a two-round team score of 590. SSU shot a 281 as a team to open the tournament, and closed out with a 309. They beat fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) teams North Carolina Central (628) and Hampton University (653).
 
SSU senior Travis Roe led the Tigers with a two-round score of 144. Roe shot a 66 to open the tournament. In the second round, Roe shot a 78 tying with Virginia State's Matthew Genchi who shot a 72 and 72.
 
Roe and Genchi were forced into a playoff round to determine the overall individual medalist. Genchi drained an 18-foot putt for medalist honors, while Roe came up short on a 17-footer, to finish second overall. Genchi and Roe both finished at even par.
 
Sophomore Trevor Podner finished third overall in the individual standings after shooting a 146 for the tournament (69 and 77). Brandon Neals finished tied for fourth with Chowan University's Sean Wilson. Neals shot a 149 (72 and 77) over the two rounds.
 
Senior Scott Rogers shot a 153 (76 and 77), and freshman Kevin Metzger rounded out the Tigers on the leaderboard with a 157 (74 and 83).
 
Host Virginia State finished first in the NCAA Division II bracket with a team score of 625, followed by Chowan University (628).
 
This is the third VSU Fall Classic title for the SSU men's golf program. They claimed victory in 2011 and 2012. The two-round, 6,605 yard, 72-par tournament was played on the Dogwood Trace Golf Course.
 
On the women's side, SSU played a dual match with fellow MEAC institution Hampton University at the VSU Fall Classic.
 
The Lady Pirates claimed victory in the match with a team score of 808 (403 and 405). The Lady Tigers shot a team score of 827 (412 and 415) over the two-rounds.
 
SSU newcomer Sydney Woolfolk led the Lady Tigers with a 158 (78 and 80), followed by Rachelle Orme (159), Jocelyn Williams (165) and Cheyenne Willard (175).
 
Hampton's Cheryl Chua and Mikea Granberry shared the top honor, both carding a 152 for the head-to-head matchup.
 
The Tigers continue the fall season with the Old Dominion Fall Invitational in Powell's Point, N.C. Oct. 19-21. The Lady Tigers travel to Rock Hill, S.C. for the Winthrop Invitational, Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.
