Women’s Tennis Drops Season Opener


The Lady Tiger tennis team played host to Presbyterian College to open the 2014 season on the new Tiger Tennis Courts. SSU fell 0-7 to the Lady Blue Hose.

In doubles action, SSU dropped three sets against PC.  Andrea Pavlovic and Nadin Olsson went head-to-head with Courtney Gardiner and Greer Ransome, losing 1-8. In the number two position, Angela Bonilla, paired with Jennyfer Vivas, dropped a 1-8 set to Madison Utberg and Patricia Alves. 

In the final doubles pairing, SSU's Nicole Ashiedu teamed with Katelyn Grandison to face Caroline DeLoach and Kayla Stanford. PC prevailed with a score of 8-4.

Playing from the number one position in singles action, Pavlovic was defeated by Alves, with scores of 6-3 and 6-3.  Caroline Ferrari dropped Bonilla in straight sets 6-1 and 6-0.

In the third and fourth positions, Olsson fell to Utberg 0-6 and 6-7, and Vivas was defeated by Lucia Leahy 6-2 and 6-4. Ashiedu and Grandison closed out the match falling to Anotonia Conze (6-4 and 6-1) and Lovey Sheppard (6-2, retired), respectively.

SSU continues the 2014 campaign with a trip to Montgomery, Alabama. They will face Alabama State and Alabama A&M on February 7 and 8. The Lady Tigers return home on February 11 for a bout with Albany State. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
