Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Norfolk State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Lady Tigers came out strong against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe Norfolk State Monday evening, and held the momentum a full 40 minutes for a 79-47 rout of the Lady Spartans.

Savannah State improves to 12-9 overall and 5-2 in the MEAC. In their third year competing in the MEAC, the five conference wins are a single season best record for the program.

Senior Ezinne Kalu led the field with 24 points. Freshman Kenyata Hendrix recorded 11 points, while Bria Dorsey added 10 points. Jasmine Norman led the field in rebounds with 10. Dominique Harper led the Lady Spartans with 15 points.

The Lady Tigers dominated from the tipoff, opening with a 9-2 run in the first five minutes. Norfolk State battled back, cutting SSU's lead to 11-9 with 12:53 to play in the first half behind a good free-throw from Amber Brown.

SSU responded with a 14-4 run in the following five minutes for a 25-13 lead with 7:43 to play. Kalu capped the run with a good layup off a steal. Kalu leads the Lady Tigers in steals with 50 overall, and is ranked in the top-10 nationally in steals per game.

 SSU extended the lead to 20 points in the final five minutes of play with a 10-3 run capped by a 3-pointer from Hendrix for a 39-19 advantage into the locker room.

Norfolk State went 17:22 without a field goal in the final six minutes of the first half, into the first 11 minutes of the second half. However, they were excellent from the charity strip, hitting 16-of-20 offerings in the second half alone for an 80.0 percent shooting clip.

SSU shot 44.8 percent from the floor, going 12-for-29, and went 75.9 percent from the free-throw line in the win. SSU tacked on 40 points in the second half to their already 20-point advantage, going up by as much as 32 points. They outrebounded Norfolk State 45-28.

The Lady Tigers head out on a three-game road stretch to open February. They visit Bethune-Cookman on February 1, Florida A&M on February 3 and Delaware State on February 10. They return home on February 15 to face North Carolina A&T State.
