Women’s Basketball Stave Off Surge From FAMU To Go 7-0 At Home

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State scored 40 points in the first half of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game against Florida A&M, and held onto that lead despite a huge surge from the Lady Rattlers in the second half, for an 80-68 win in Tiger Arena on Monday.

The Lady Tigers improve to 11-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while remaining undefeated in Tiger Arena. Florida A&M falls to 8-11 and 2-4 in conference.

SSU's last win over Florida A&M came on January 4, 2008 in Tallahassee, Florida. SSU beat the Lady Rattlers 74-66. This is the program's first MEAC win over FAMU.

Tiyonda Davis scored her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Ezinne Kalu led the field with 25 points, her second highest scoring effort of the current season. Jasmine Norman added 12 points, while Jasmine Kirkland put up 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Bria Dorsey scored a fast break layup with 13:30 to play in the second half, lifting SSU to a 23 point (52-29) lead. The visitors responded with a fast paced press that opened up some room for scoring.

FAMU's Jasmine Grice sank a layup, and two good free-throws to open a 13-6 run for the visitors. Ann Marie Harris sank a layup with 9:12 to play cutting SSU's lead to 56-40.

Grice sank two free-throws with 6:51 to get the Lady Rattlers the closest they would come to SSU's lead, 52-61.

Davis put SSU back up by double digits, 62-52, with a good free-throw at the 5:59 mark. In the final five minutes of the contest, the Lady Tigers held the hard working Lady Rattlers at bay and below double-digits in the spread.

Tierra Prothro and Taneka Rubin each hit 3-pointers in the final minute to cut SSU's final lead from 14 points to 12. Kalu scored the game's final basket with a layup at the 23 second mark.

Florida A&M improved their field shooting in the second half to 42.9 percent from 18.9 percent in the first half, and their 3-point shooting from 8.3 percent to 33.3 percent.

The Lady Tigers shot at a 52.8 percent (28-for-53) clip from the floor and 41.7 percent (5-for-12) from the beyond the arch. They scored 36 points in the paint and outrebounded FAMU 46-42.

The first half was all Lady Tigers, as SSU opened the contest with an 11-4 run capped by a 3-pointer from Kalu. With 5:18 to play, SSU opened a 16-2 run to end the first half with a 40-18 lead.

SSU returns to action and continues the MEAC schedule at home against perennial MEAC power Hampton on Saturday, January 25. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
