Smith Powers SSU Past Coppin State

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md.- Jyles Smith scored 14 points, had three blocks and pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds to help Savannah State defeat Coppin State 75-53.

Smith's 20 rebounds is a new SSU Division I single game record. His previous high was 16 rebounds on November 14, 2013 over Florida National. The 20 rebounds breaks the SSU D-I record of 19 set by Arnold Louis on January 12, 2013 against Coppin State.
 
The win gives the Tigers a 2-0 conference record and 4-12 overall.
 
The crowd of 671 saw Savannah State shoot 57.1 percent from the field in the first half and 60 percent in the second period. The Tigers finished the contest making 52.4 percent of their 3-point shots.
 
The game was close much of the first half and was tied at 14 with 12:47 left.
 
SSU led 22-19 with 7:46 remaining in the first period but pulled away by ending the half with a 18-7 spurt.
 
The Tigers led 40-26 at intermission.
 
A layup by Khiry White to start the second half pushed SSU's lead to 16 points but the Eagles rallied to slice their deficit to 46-39 with 16:22 left in the game.
 
Savannah State responded with a 13-2 run to increase their lead to 18 with 8:54 remaining.
 
Coppin State got as close as 64-51 with six minutes on the clock but the Tigers ended the game with a 11-2 run for the 22-point victory.
 
Freshman Jeremiah Hill led all scorers with 16 points while fellow frosh Alante Fenner came off the bench to add 14 points in the win.
 
SSU out-rebounded Coppin State 35 to 26.
 
Coppin State (4-11) shot 41.8 percent from the field but only made one of 11 free throw attempts. Michael Murray led the Eagles with 15 points.
