Kirkland Sets New Career Scoring Record

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. – In the Lady Tigers second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game of the season, senior Jasmine Kirkland set a career scoring record and led the field with 23 points in a 53-68 loss to Coppin State on Saturday in Baltimore, Maryland.

Kirkland broke her career-high single game scoring record with 20 points earlier this season against Longwood.  Saturday the Warren, Ohio native went 8-for-15 from the field and 7-for-9 from the charity strip. Fellow senior Ezinne Kalu added 11 points in the loss. Kirkland, senior Shawanda Hanton and freshman Tiyonda Davis each had seven rebounds.

The Lady Eagles were led by Ashle Craig, who scored 18 points. Omaah Tayong grabbed 23 rebounds and scored 10 points for Coppin State.

Savannah State falls to 8-8 on the season and 1-1 in conference play, while Coppin State improves to 5-9 and 2-0 in the MEAC.

Trailing by double-digits for most of the second half, the Lady Tigers mounted a 7-2 run midway through the second twenty that was capped by a layup from Kirkland. SSU cut the Lady Eagles lead to 49-43 with 10:15 to play. It was the closest the Lady Tigers would come to the home team's lead.

In a little over a one minute span between the 6:31 mark and the 5:24 mark, SSU lost Kirkland, Kalu and Jasmine Norman to foul out. The Lady Eagles took advantage of the losses, going on a 5-1 run for a 63-47 advantage with 1:37 to play.

Off the bench, Zadous Pollard drained two 3-pointers in the last minute, but the late surge was not enough to overcome the point difference as Tayong sank a free-throw with 13 seconds left for the final score.

The Lady Tigers shot 30.4 percent from the floor and hit 5-of-18 3-point offerings in the game. Coppin shot 35.8 percent from the floor and 65.9 percent from the free-throw line. The home team had 41 free-throw attempts, as SSU mounted a season-high 32 personal fouls.

Savannah State returns to action on Monday as they make the trip down the beltway to face Howard in Washington, D.C. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
