Lady Tigers Conclude Regular Season; Sweep Lady Bulldogs

Box Score
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Monday afternoon, the Savannah State softball team concluded their regular season schedule, and garnered a series sweep over South Carolina State, with a 13-7 victory on Tiger Softball Field.

On Sunday, the Lady Tigers solidified a trip to the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship in Ormond Beach, Florida this week with a twinbill sweep of South Carolina State.

With Monday's win, they will (unofficially) enter the MEAC Championship as the third seed in the Southern Division. SSU won the Southern Division title in 2012.

SSU concludes the 2013 regular season with winning records; 24-22 overall and 8-7 in the MEAC. It is only the second time in school history the softball team has ended the regular season with a winning record. The first was 2012.

Monday's win was chalked full of hits from both teams. Together S.C. State and SSU racked up 26 hits, including five home runs in the contest.

From the mound, senior Madison Hedderly led the Lady Tigers with her 18th pitching win of the season. After 6.0 innings of work, she allowed seven runs (three earned) on 11 hits with five strikeouts. In a single inning of relief, freshman Amanda McDowell allowed no hits, and struck out two to end the game.

The Lady Bulldogs dented the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits and two costly SSU errors.

SSU responded in the bottom of the opening frame. Ariona Hagood doubled to center, platting Michaela Patton who reached on an error.

Freshman Torrian Wright went yard for the 16th time this season, scoring Hagood to tie the ballgame up at three. Wright set the school's regular season home run record in her first year as a Lady Tiger.

Later in the inning, Megan Uhrman singled to center, scoring India Morgan, who reached on a fielder's choice, to lift SSU to a 4-3 advantage.

Each team scored one run in the second and third innings on a combined seven hits. After a scoreless fourth inning, SSU lead the Lady Bulldogs 6-5.

In the top of the fifth, S.C. State's Taylor-Anne Harris hit an infield single with the bases loaded, scoring Nicole Sanders, who reached on a single, knotting the game up at six runs apiece. With one out and the bases loaded, the SSU defense stranded all three runners with a 3-2-6 double play to escape the inning.

With the momentum from the double play, SSU quickly took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Hedderly blasted her eighth home run of the year to lead off the inning. Later, senior Tiffany Taylor doubled to center, scoring Morgan, who singled. Hagood singled to score Taylor later in the inning.

With one out on the board, sophomore Amber Hallman cleared the bases with a 3-run home run over the center field fence, her fourth of the season.  The Lady Tigers took a commanding 13-6 lead in the fifth with seven runs on seven hits and one error.

S.C. State looked to rally in the sixth. Kabrealyn Coleman scored on an error after reaching on a single to right. With two outs and one runner on, Hedderly caught Tiffany Harris swinging to end the inning.

SSU was led at the plate by Hagood. She went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Hedderly was 3-for-4, while Uhrman, Taylor and Antonette Smith all added two runs apiece.
Harris led the Lady Bulldogs, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Vianney Gomez was tagged with her 14th pitching loss after a full 6.0 innings of work. She allowed 13 runs (9 earned) on 15 hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

The 2013 MEAC Softball Championship will begin on May 9th in Ormond Beach, Florida.
