GREENSBORO, N.C. – On Thursday, Savannah State and Universities from the East Region descended on the Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, North Carolina on the campus of North Carolina A&T State to open the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Region Preliminary Championship.
SSU competed in three of the six events they qualified for this year on Thursday. In the men's 100 meter dash, senior
Darrius Baker finished with a time of 10.53 in the preliminary heat. Freshman
Kenshard Hamilton ran a 10.63, also in the preliminary.
On the women's side, sophomore
Asia Stinson ran an 11.71 in the preliminaries of the 100 meter dash.
Jaymi White had a mark of 5.70 meters in the preliminaries of the long jump.
The competition continues today. SSU will look to qualify for the National Championship in Eugene, Oregon in a couple of events. Sophomore
Cameron Hall will run in the 110 meter hurdles at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening. Baker is set to run in the 200 meter around 8:25 p.m. on Friday.
The men's relay team of Hamilton, Hall,
Chazwyn Price, and Baker will run in the 4x100 meter relay on Saturday, May 24 to close out the Preliminary Championship
This is the second largest team to represent SSU in the NCAA Regionals in the school's modern era. The Tigers have sent competitors to the annual postseason meet every year since elevating to Division I in the 2002-03 season.
