SSU Qualifies For Six Events In NCAA Track and Field Regionals

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams qualified a total of six student-athletes in six events for the 2013 NCAA East Region Preliminary Championship.

The Regionals will be hosted by fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) school North Carolina A&T State University on the Irwin Belk track in Greensboro, North Carolina on May 23.

The SSU men's relay teams enter the Regionals after a stellar season that saw the school's first relay win at the historic Penn Relays, and several top finishes around the region.

The relay team of Kenshard Hamilton, Cameron Hall, Chazwyn Price, and Darrius Baker ran a 40.10 at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 10 to qualify for the NCAA meet. Gregory Terrell will travel with the team as an alternate.

Hall ran a personal best, and the third best time in the SSU modern era, of 13.90 in the preliminaries of the 110 meter hurdles at the 2013 MEAC Championship to qualify for the NCAA Regional in the event.

Baker, a senior, qualified for both the 100m and 200m dashes. Baker won the 100m dash at the MEAC Championship with a personal best time of 10.39 to qualify for the NCAA meet. He garnered the silver at the MEAC Championship in the 200m with a time of 20.73, qualifying him for the post-season.

Hamilton, a freshman at SSU, will run with Baker in the 100m dash after qualifying with a time of 10.47 at the Shamrock Invitational in March of this year.

For the Lady Tigers, sophomore Asia Stinson will represent SSU in the 100 meter dash after qualifying at the Winthrop University Invitational on March 28 with a time of 11.64.

Jaymi White will compete in the long jump for SSU. She qualified with a jump of 6.07 meters, and a first place finish at the University Carolina's Cup on April 12. The Lady Tigers won the Carolina Cup this year with a team score of 143.

SSU has qualified members of its outdoor track and field teams for the NCAA Regional meet every year since elevating to Division I. Including this year's student-athletes, SSU has now qualified close to 40 entrants for the post-season meet.
