Roe Leads SSU At PGA National Minority Championship

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Savannah State sophomore Travis Roe led the Tigers with a 4th place finish in the 27th annual PGA National Minority Championship this past weekend at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Roe shot a 3-under-par 69 in the opening round, tying English brothers Leon and Ryan Fricker from Bethune-Cookman for first place. The Tigers were sitting in second place overall with a first round score of 293 on Friday.

After a 77 in the second round, Roe bounced back in the final round on Sunday, shooting a 71 for a three-round total score of 217.

The Tigers finished in 5th place in the tournament with a three-round total score of 905 (293, 313, 299). The young team fielded three sophomores and only one senior in the Championship.

Scott Rogers opened with a 1-over-par 73, and recovered in the final round with a 76 after a second round 79 for a three-day total of 228. SSU senior Ryan Lassiter followed Rogers with a three day total of 229. Lassiter opened strong with a 74, and finished with a 79 and 76.

Brandon Neals shot two rounds of 78, but finished with a 76 on Sunday for a total score of 232. Caleb Simons opened with a 77, and finished with an 89, and 78, carding a 244 overall.

Bethune-Cookman won the men's team Division I title with a three-round total of 883 (283, 306, 294). Kevin Kirakossian, representing the defending champions Texas Pan-American, won medalist honors with a three-day total of 212 (74, 67, 71).

For the second year in school history, SSU fielded two women in the Women's Independent Division. Jocelyn Williams tied for 12th with a three-round score of 252 (86, 82, 84) Michelle Gifford carded a 254 (85, 84, 85) for the tournament.

The 2013 edition of the PGA National Minority Championship saw over 200 entrants and 12 Division I teams competing.
