SSU Falls To Hampton In Semifinal Of MEAC Championship

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Savannah State struggled to get their bats going in the semifinal game of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship in Ormond Beach, Florida, as Hampton University downed the Lady Tigers 3-1 to advance to the MEAC Title Game on Saturday.

Savannah State is still alive in the tournament. The Lady Tigers are now in the elimination bracket and will face the winner of Game 12 against Norfolk State and Delaware State at 6 p.m. on Friday night.

A win will send the Lady Tigers to the MEAC title game to face Hampton. SSU falls to 26-23 overall while the Lady Pirates improved to 33-23.

The Lady Tigers managed only three hits in the game. Jailynn Jackson led her team to victory with eight strikeouts, allowing only one run (no earned) with three walks.

Senior Madison Hedderly was tagged with her 10th loss of the season after 6.0 innings of work in the circle. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

In the top of the first, Hampton platted a single run behind a double from Taylor McCoy for a 1-0 lead.

Scoreless through the second, Hampton tacked on another run in the bottom of the third inning. McCoy singled to right, scoring Diamond Ponds who doubled to reach.

McCoy led the Lady Pirates at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

SSU avoided the shutout in the top of the sixth. MEAC Rookie of the Year, Torrian Wright singled to center field. On the same play, Ariona Hagood, who walked, scored on a fielding error by Hampton's centerfielder.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kerissa Burruel singled to score Adrianna Scott who doubled to reach for the final run of the game. Hampton racked up seven hits in the contest, and committed the only error of the contest.

Savannah State is now 4-3 overall in MEAC Tournament games.
