Hedderly Leads SSU Past N.C. Central; Lady Tigers Sweep Series

Box Score

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Led by senior Madison Hedderly, the Savannah State softball team downed North Carolina Central, 5-1, in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday. With the win, SSU swept the series after winning both games in Saturday's doubleheader.

Hedderly competed a full seven innings in the circle with nine strikeouts, allowing one earned run on four hits with no walks. The Dublin, Ohio native picked up her 16th pitching win of the season.

From the plate, the Lady Tigers blasted nine runs in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match up. Leading SSU was freshman Michaela Patton who was 2-for-4 in the batter's box.

After three and a half scoreless innings with only a combined two hits on the board, Savannah State broke the stalemate with a game-changing fourth inning.

Megan Uhrman singled to reach, leading off for SSU. Rachel White hit a sacrifice bunt, moving Destiny Webster (pinch running for Uhrman) to third. Webster then made it home on an errant throw from the Lady Eagles, lifting the Lady Tigers to a 1-0 advantage.

N.C. Central failed to respond in the top of the fifth as Hedderly sat the first three batters.

Savannah State sealed up the win in the bottom of the frame. Leading off for the Lady Tigers, freshman Antonette Smith singled to short. Sophomore Amber Hallman hit her second home run of the season to score Smith.

Later in the inning, White blasted a single up the middle, scoring Torrian Wright who reached on a single, and Aaliyah Jones. Jones was pinch running for Hedderly who singled. The two runs lifted SSU to a 4-0 lead.

Hedderly entered the seventh in search of a one-hit shutout, but the Lady Eagles refused to back down. Bianka Molina doubled to left field, scoring Markell Wylie, who singled, for N.C. Central's lone run.

The Lady Eagles loaded the bases later in the inning, threatening to tie the game. Hedderly struck out De'Onna Smith to end the game.

Central's London Booker was tagged with her 19th loss of the season after 4.0 innings of work. She allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers improved to 20-14 overall and 4-2 in the MEAC, while N.C. Central falls to 2-29 and 0-5 in the conference.

Savannah State travels to Greensboro, North Carolina next weekend for a three-game MEAC series against North Carolina A&T.
