Freshmen Lead SSU In Sweep Of N.C. Central

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State softball team, led by a pair of freshmen, opened a three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series with North Carolina Central on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep.

Trailing late into game one, freshman Torrian Wright sparked the offense to lead the Lady Tigers to a 7-4 win. From the mound in game two, freshman Amanda McDowell pitched a stellar seven innings to lead her team to a 5-1 win.

The Lady Tigers improved to 19-14 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC. The Lady Eagles fall to 2-28, and 1-6 in the conference. Savannah State concludes the series on Sunday with the third game. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Lady Tiger Softball Field in Savannah.

Wright Stuff
Savannah State went into the bottom of the fifth inning of game one trailing 1-5 and without any momentum at the plate. The Lady Eagles had racked up four hits and scored four runs in the previous two innings for the lead.

The Lady Tigers had only two hits going into the fifth, but Wright quickly changed the game with her 10th home run of the season. Wright, who leads the MEAC in home runs, broke a nine-game streak in which she did not go yard.  

SSU senior Madison Hedderly followed Wright with her tenth double of the season. Later, Hedderly was scored on an error that saw Ariona Hagood reach. Another SSU freshman, Antonette Smith, blasted a double to center, scoring senior Tiffany Taylor who singled and Hagood.

The five hit, four run inning gave SSU a 5-4 advantage and a lead they would not relinquish in the subsequent innings.

Savannah State closed the door on N.C. Central in the sixth. Hallman led-off with her fourth double of the season. Wright then blasted her 11th home run of the season, platting Hallman to notch the final score. SSU racked up 12 hits in the contest.

Hedderly garnered her 15th pitching win of the season after seven innings of work. She allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

London Booker was tagged with the pitching loss after 4.2 innings in the circle. She allowed five runs (one earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Booker is 1-18 from the mound.

Strong Seven
McDowell, who missed several games due to injury returned to face Arkansas and Florida A&M with dismal results in the last few weeks.

However, the Cheney, Washington native returned to form on Saturday.

McDowell pitched a no-hitter through the first four innings against the Lady Eagles. In the fifth, Bianka Molina doubled to center, ending McDowell's chance at the elusive no-no.

McDowell picked up her third win of the season after a full seven in the circle. She allowed one run (no earned) on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

On the offensive side, SSU went to work early in the game. In the opening inning, Hedderly singled to shortstop to score Patton who reached on an error.
Patton reached on an error in the second inning that scored Rachel White who singled, and Taylor who reached on an error. In the third, Megan Uhrman and Hedderly scored on a throwing error that saw Taylor reach.

After three complete, the Lady Tigers led 5-0 with five hits.

The Lady Eagles denied Savannah State the shutout in the seventh inning behind a fielder's choice that scored Markell Wylie after she reached on an error. McDowell struck out Regina Diaz to end the game in the top of the seventh.

N.C. Central's Kayla Mcpeek was tagged with her first pitching loss of the season after 2.1 innings in the circle. She allowed five runs (no earned) on five hits with two walks and a single strikeout.

The Lady Tigers are batting .311 as a team for the season. SSU has nine players currently batting over .300. Wright leads SSU with a .383 batting percentage and a .809 slugging percentage.
