SSU Falls To Bethune-Cookman

Box Score
SAVANNAH, Ga. – In Sunday's series finale, the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman routed Savannah State, 11-4, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match up at Lady Tiger Field in Savannah, Ga.

With the win on Sunday, Bethune-Cookman sweeps the three-game series and improves to 10-1 in the MEAC and 16-31 overall. SSU falls to 21-22 and 5-7 in the conference.

It is the first time since March 1 the Lady Tigers' record has fallen below .500. The loss extends SSU's losing streak to seven games.

The Lady Tigers opened Sunday's game with a strong start after two rough losses on Saturday. Returning to the mound from injury for SSU, in her first start since April 13, was senior and preseason MEAC Pitcher of the Year, Madison Hedderly

Hedderly held the Lady Wildcats to single runs in the first and second innings to open the game. Kelsey Rodney platted Calesha Shelley on a sacrifice fly in the first, and Shamaria Engram hit her fourth home run of the season in the second to give the visitors a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the second.

The Lady Tigers responded in kind in the bottom of the second. Antonette Smith singled up the middle to score India Morgan, who was hit with a pitch. Sophomore Amber Hallman walked to score Smith.

Freshman Torrian Wright was hit with a pitch that scored Michaela Patton who reached on a single. Later, Ariona Hagood scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a fielder's choice to lift SSU to a 4-2 lead.

The Lady Tigers lead was short lived, as Bethune-Cookman's Kelsey Rodney hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the third to score Aurelia Gamch who doubled, and Michele Banuelos-Smith blasted her sixth homer of the season to even the score at four runs apiece.

In all three games of the series, no team scored in the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth Bethune-Cookman regained the lead with three runs on six hits and one SSU error, for a 7-4 advantage. SSU failed to respond to the runs, going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth.

Bethune-Cookman shut the door on Savannah State in the sixth.  Gamch led-off with her second home run of the season. The Lady Wildcats followed it up with two more runs on two hits and three SSU errors.

The Lady Wildcats tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh on two hits after SSU failed to get on base in the sixth.

Looking to rally from the seven point deficient, SSU loaded the bases twice in the seventh, but were unable to take advantage as Bethune-Cookman's Shanel Tolbert forced Hedderly into a ground-out to end the game.

Tolbert picked up her 12th pitching win after 7.0 innings in the circle. She allowed four earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Hedderly was tagged with her ninth loss of the season after a complete game toeing the rubber. She allowed 11 runs (seven earned) on 15 hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Savannah State closes out the regular season May 4-5 with a three-game series against South Carolina State on Lady Tiger Field. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
