PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Several members from Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams are set to compete in the Penn Relays this weekend, the largest track and field event in the nation.
The Penn Relay Carnival, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania and held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the first and oldest relay meet in the nation.
Dating back to 1895, the Penn Relays have become the foremost competition for the track and field athlete. This year, the meet boast more than 60 countries participating and 22,000 entrants.
Savannah State has competed at the Penn Relays for several years now. In 2012, the SSU men's relay team qualified and placed in the 4x200 meter relay for the first time in school history.
The team of
Chazwyn Price,
Cameron Hall,
Darrius Baker and
Gregory Terrell finished in 7
th place in the 4x200 with a time of 1:25.01.
The same relay team continued on to qualify for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championship; they were the first men's relay team to run in a National Championship for SSU. They placed 22
nd in the 4x100m with a time of 40.68.
This year, the Tigers will compete in the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400 relay events at the Penn Relays. The men's squad will also field teams in the sprint medley, and shuttle hurdles.
Individually, SSU freshman
Kenshard Hamilton will compete in the 100m dash, while Hall will run in the 110m hurdles.
Lemaar Shakir and
Felton Chinn have qualified for the 400m hurdles.
In the field, freshman
Dolphurs Hayes will represent SSU in the pole vault.
The Lady Tigers are set to field teams in the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400 meter relays, as well as the sprint medley.
Individually,
Asia Stinson will represent SSU in the 100m dash. In the field,
Jaymi White and Rajeanne Jarrett will compete in the long jump competition.
The preliminary events for the relay races are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, while finals will be run on Saturday. The field events will be held in conjunction with the relays.
After the Penn Relays, Savannah State will compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, May 2-4.
