College Of Charleston Sweeps SSU

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – In a nonconference twinbill Thursday evening, the Savannah State softball team was swept by the College of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. The Lady Cougars shutout SSU, 8-0 in the first game, and sealed up the sweep with an 8-2 win in game two.

The Lady Tigers fall to 21-18 overall, while the College of Charleston improves to 28-16. Savannah State continues the 2013 season with their final nonconference series against Mercer University, April 24 in Macon, Georgia.

SSU wraps up the regular season with two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series at home against Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State.

Shutout
The Lady Cougars loaded the bases in the bottom of the second after teams went scoreless through the first inning.  Rebecca Mueller scored on an error after reaching on a walk.  Kelsey Hodgson platted three of her teammates with a home run blast to left center to lift CofC to a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the third, SSU's Rachel White and Megan Uhrman singled to get on base, but were stranded on a fielder's choice-ground out from Amber Hallman.

CofC added a single run in the bottom of third behind a fielder's choice that saw Carly Corthell reach and Mackenzie Maples score. Maples reached on a single.

After a scoreless fourth inning, College of Charleston put the winning runs on with a single to left and a walk with two outs showing. SSU freshman Amanda McDowell forced Maples into a ground out at second base to escape the inning and keep SSU in the fight.

Both teams went scoreless in the fifth as CofC stranded one runner. In the top of the sixth, the Lady Tigers attempted a rally. Michaela Patton reached on an error and was advanced on a single from Hallman. A foul out from Torrian Wright advanced both runners into scoring position.

A line out from India Morgan ended the Lady Tigers chances for rally. In the bottom of the sixth, College of Charleston sealed up the early, mercy rule victory with two runs on three hits.

Hope Klicker picked up her 14th pitching win of the season after 6.0 innings on the mound. She allowed no runs on four hits with six strikeouts.

McDowell was tagged with her eighth loss after 5.1 innings of work. She allowed eight runs (three earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and seven walks.

Out Hit
In game two, Savannah State avoided the mercy rule, early end with a late rally, but the Lady Tigers were unable to overcome a big second inning from the Lady Cougars.

In a mirror of the first game, the College of Charleston put up five runs in the second inning behind two hits and two costly SSU errors.

The Lady Tigers responded in the fourth after a scoreless third inning. Hallman singled to reach and was scored on double down the left field line from Wright. After 3.5 innings, CofC led SSU 5-1.

In the bottom of the frame, Hodgson blasted her second home run of the day, scoring Lizzy Vaughn and Ashton Jarrett who both reached on singles, to lift the Lady Cougars to an 8-1 lead.

In the fifth, College of Charleston threatened to end the game early, after getting the game winning run on. A ground out from Maples ended the inning, helping SSU to continue the fight into the sixth inning.

Destiny Webster singled on a bunt to reach, and was advanced to third on a fielder's choice that resulted in an error to open the sixth. With two runners on and no outs, SSU looked to spark a late rally. Webster was caught in a double play-ground out from Megan Uhrman that put up two quick outs.

A ground out from Hallman ended the Lady Tigers chances in the sixth. In the bottom of the frame, CofC stranded the game winning run again as Hallman grabbed a line drive and tagged the runner at third for an unassisted double play to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, SSU added a final run. Wright was walked, and freshman Aaliyah Jones came into pinch run. A single from Morgan advanced Jones to second. Later a ground out advanced both Jones and Morgan into scoring position.

Ariona Hagood reached on a fielding error that scored Jones. Hagood was caught stealing and McDowell flied out to center field to end the game with one SSU runner on base.

Stephanie Saylors picked up her 12th pitching win after 4.0 innings in the circle. She allowed one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts.

SSU senior Cassie Standard pitched a full 6.0 innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits with seven walks and no strikeouts. Standard is 1-2 for the season.
