Aggies Rout Lady Tigers

Box Score
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After splitting a doubleheader on Saturday, North Carolina A&T routed the Savannah State Lady Tigers in the rubber match on Sunday, 13-5, in a five inning game at the Aggie Softball Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Lady Tigers opened the scoring in the first inning behind an error from NCAT's centerfielder that scored Michaela Patton who reached on a double. SSU loaded the bases with two outs, but a forced fly-out stranded all three runners.

NCAT responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs on one hit and a costly SSU error.  The Lady Aggies loaded the bags with one out against SSU freshman pitcher Amanda McDowell. She struck out Amari McNeil looking, and forced Alexiss Dominguez to fly out, stranding the Aggie runners to escape the inning.

SSU was unable to respond in the second and third innings, as NCAT added a single run in the second and two more runs in the third for 6-1 lead into the fourth inning.

The Lady Tigers worked a rally in the fourth. With loaded bases, sophomore Amber Hallman hit her third home run and first grand slam of the season, platting Patton who singled, McDowell who reached on a fielder's choice, and senior Tiffany Taylor who singled.

The four RBI blast cut NCAT's lead to 6-5. Freshman Torrian Wright followed Hallman with a double to right, but Madison Hedderly fouled out to end the rally for SSU.

Unscathed by the rally, the Lady Aggies went to work at the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Jax Kaye Woodard opened the five-hit, six-run inning with her seventh home run of the season. The clear momentum shift left SSU trailing 12-5 after four complete innings.

In the top of the fifth, SSU went down 1-2-3 with no response to the massive offensive from the Lady Aggies in the fourth.

McNeil blasted a double to centerfield off SSU senior Cassie Standard, scoring Raven Smith for the 13th and game-ending run.

Ashira Dobison garnered her first pitching win of the season after 3.2 innings in the circle. She allowed five runs (one earned) on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.

McDowell was tagged with her seventh loss after 4.0 innings of work. She allowed 12 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers fall to 21-16 overall and 5-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), while North Carolina A&T improves to 6-24 and 4-5 in the conference.

Savannah State returns to action with two nonconference series'. They will play the College of Charleston on April 18 with a doubleheader in Charleston, South Carolina. On April 24, SSU will make up a rained delayed doubleheader with Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
