Tigers Finish Second In MEAC Showcase

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Led by sophomore Travis Roe, the Savannah State men's golf team finished second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Golf Showcase in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the Legends Golf & Resort Club this past weekend.

On Sunday, Roe finished the final round three-under par and with a three-round score of 213 (73, 72, 68). In the group behind Roe, Bethune-Cookman's Matthew McKnight sank a birdie putt on the 18th to finish four-under par and edge Roe out for medalist honors.

The Tigers placed second behind host school Bethune-Cookman with a three-round team score of 883 (305, 296, 282).

Following Roe, Brandon Neals finished tied for sixth with a 222 (72, 79, 71). Caleb Simmons finished tied for 9th with a 225 (81, 72, 72). Ryan Lassiter shot a 226 (79, 73, 74), followed by Scott Rogers with a 232 (81, 80, 71).

The 6,516 yard, Par 72 event was led by the Wildcats with a team score of 860 (291, 282, 287). North Carolina Central (912) finished third, followed by Florida A&M (941), Hampton University (979), and Maryland Eastern Shore (1010).

The Savannah State women's golf team placed fourth in the showcase with a team score of 758 (379, 379). The Lady Tigers were led by sophomore Jocelyn Williams who finished the two-round event with a 173 (88, 85), in 10th place.

Michelle Gifford shot a 194 (95, 99), and tied with teammate Candace Lewis (99, 95) for 15th place. Courtney Newton shot a 206 (97, 109), followed by Bianca Anderson with a 209 (109, 100).

Bethune-Cookman won the overall women's event with a team score of 624 (313, 311). South Carolina State (654) finished second, followed by Hampton University (702).

South Carolina State's Tiana Jones (71, 78) beat out Bethune-Cookman's Patrizia Trevisan (75, 74) in a playoff for medalist honors.

The Savannah State men's golf team has qualified for the PGA National Minority Championship, held in Port St. Lucia, Florida, May 10-12.

The men's team finished the 2012 Championship in third place, while senior Cedomir Ilic brought home Savannah State's first National Championship, winning medalist honors at the event.

SSU will also field two players from the Lady Tigers as individuals. Williams and Gifford will represent SSU in Florida. In 2012, the pair made school history by being the first two women golfers to qualify for the PGA Championship.
