Lady Tigers Split With North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. – In a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) twinbill Saturday, the Savannah State softball squad split with North Carolina A&T on the Lady Aggie Softball Field in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Lady Aggies used the long ball to down SSU 9-3 in the opening game. The Lady Tigers, led by freshman Amanda McDowell on the mound and senior Madison Hedderly at the plate, downed North Carolina A&T 6-4 in the second game. Teams combined for a total six homers in the doubleheader.

Savannah State improves to 21-15 and 5-3 in the MEAC. The Lady Aggies closed the day with a 5-24 record and a 3-5 mark in the conference. The rubber match and third game of the series is set for 12 p.m. on Sunday.

SSU freshman Torrian Wright blasted her 12th home run of the season in the top of the first, scoring Antonette Smith, who was hit with a pitch, to put the Lady Tigers up 2-0 in game one.

In the bottom of the frame, the Lady Aggie regained the momentum. Jax Kaye Woodard blasted a grand slam over the center field wall, scoring Alejandra Barcenas, Detavia Keenana, and Zabresha Blakeney for a 4-2 NCAT advantage.

The score stuck through the second inning as teams combined for one hit. In the top of the third, SSU Michaela Patton singled to third. Fellow infielder Amber Hallman platted Patton with a sacrifice fly to left field, cutting the Lady Aggies lead to 4-3.

N.C. A&T extended their lead in the fourth with a second homer. Raven Smith went yard, platting Tranea Jones who singled to reach. SSU failed to respond in the fifth, as Lady Aggie pitcher Shelby Snyder forced the first three Lady Tiger batters out.

Leading 6-3 in the fifth, the Lady Aggies capitalized on the momentum from the fourth; platting two more runs behind two hits and one costly SSU error for an 8-3 lead.

NCAT closed the door on Savannah State in the sixth with the fourth home run of the game. Tiffany Macklin hit over the center field fence to seal up the final score and record the Lady Aggies 10th hit of the game.

Snyder (4-2) garnered her fourth pitching win of the season after 7.0 innings in the circle. She allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

SSU senior Madison Hedderly (16-8) was tagged with her 8th loss of the season after 6.0 innings of work. She allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

McDowell picked up a season/career-high 10 strikeouts to help lead the Lady Tigers to a 6-4 victory in the nightcap. McDowell pitched a full 7.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits with three walks.

After a scoreless opening inning, SSU dented the scoreboard in the second. India Morgan doubled to right to reach, platting Wright who walked for a 1-0 Lady Tiger lead.

Morgan led the Lady Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Patton followed, going 2-for-3 as well.

NCAT failed to respond in the first two innings. In the top of the third, SSU shut the door on the Lady Aggies. Wright singled to left, scoring Patton who reached on a single.

Following Wright, Hedderly was looking at loaded bags with one out, and took full advantage. Hedderly blasted her seventh home run of the season, platting Wright, Hallman, and Smith for a 6-0 SSU lead.

In the fifth, NCAT avoided the shutout behind a triple from Detavia Keenan that scored Blakeney, and a single from Barcenas that scored Keenan. The Lady Aggies attempted a rally in the seventh, scoring two more runs behind a homer from Woodard. But a fly out from Sabrina Edmonds ended the game.

Ashira Dobison was tagged her 14th loss of the season after 7.0 innings of work. She allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
