UMES Upends Savannah State In OT

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In a mirror of the 2011-12 season the Savannah State women's basketball team ended the 2012-13 regular season with a loss to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The Hawks outscored the Lady Tigers 16-5 in overtime to end their season with a 55-44 win in Tiger Arena.

SSU fell to Maryland Eastern Shore, 42-47, in the final game of the 2011-12 season.

The Lady Tigers celebrated senior night in Tiger Arena, honoring seniors Smiljana Cuk and Erin Hogue in pregame ceremonies.

Hogue led the field with her 12th double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. She holds the schools Division I record for double-doubles in a single season, surpassing the previous number of eight.

With 34 seconds to play in the second half, Hogue sank two free-throws to give the Lady Tigers a 39-37 lead. In the waning seconds, Maryland Eastern Shore's Alexis Udoji sank a layup in the paint to tie the game for the sixth time and force overtime.

The Hawks opened the overtime period with a 9-0 run, backed by two 3-pointers from Shawnee Sweeney. Sha-Kiyla Finney drained a 3-pointer with 1:39 to play in the OT to lift UMES to a 51-41 lead.

The Lady Tigers were unable to recover from the strong opening, managing only five points and shooting 16.7 percent from the field.

With the loss, Savannah State falls to 7-22 overall and 2-14 in the conference. The Lady Tigers will finish in 13th place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), heading into next week's championship.

SSU will (unofficially) play South Carolina State in the opening game of the MEAC Tournament, Monday, March 11th in Norfolk, Virginia.

The Lady Tigers opened the game with an 8-3 run, capped by a good free-throw from Hogue at the 12:43 mark.

In a slow offensive game, the Hawks battle back to cut the Lady Tigers lead to two points, 8-6, with a good 3-pointer from Sweeney.

Udoji led the Hawks with a double-double, 11-12, followed by Sweeney who scored 12 points. Finney tacked on 11 and Karona Roach added 10 for UMES.

With 5:26 to play, SSU pushed out to a 12-9 lead on a layup from Jasmine Norman. UMES got within one point twice in the final minutes of the first half, but failed to tie the game.

SSU freshman Jerryshia Williams and junior Shawanda Hanton added back-to-back field goals to lift the Lady Tigers to an 18-13 lead into the locker room.

Four minutes into the second period, Maryland Eastern Shore tied the game for the first time on a 3-pointer from Finny.

UMES edged out to a four point lead, but Williams tied the game at 24 with 12:08 to play with a layup on a fast break. Williams scored nine points and grabbed a season-high five rebounds.

Hogue added a jumper, and Williams sank two free-throws to lift SSU to a 28-24 lead with 10:34 to play. The Lady Tigers maintained the lead through the middle of the second half.

The Hawks then went on a 6-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Roach to give the visitors a 32-30 lead with 7:06 to play. Norman sank a layup a minute and a half later to tie the game for the third time.

UMES took the lead again on two good free-throws from Shanyce Stewart, before SSU point guard Jazmin Thomas sank a jumper with 2:25 to play to tie the game for the fifth time.

The Lady Tigers close out a regular season that was plagued with injuries. Most notably, was the loss of junior point guard Ezinne Kalu to a knee injury, early in the season.  Jasmine Kirkland and Andrietta Thomas, both valuable assets, were also lost to injury.

Hogue ends her last regular season of basketball with two SSU Division I records. She holds the record for double-doubles in a single season and she tied the school record for most rebounds in a single game. She grabbed 18 rebounds in a game against South Carolina State this year.
