Lady Tigers Succumb To Aggies

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  The Savannah State women's basketball team played a stellar first half of basketball against No. 2 North Carolina A&T  in Greensboro, North Carolina Monday night, but the Lady Tigers succumb to the Aggies shooting prowess in the second half, falling 47-58.

SSU's Jasmine Norman led the field with 16 points, while senior Erin Hogue led the field in rebounds with 12. Leading the Aggies, Tracy King and JaQuayla Berry each had 13 points, while King grabbed 10 rebounds for the games only double-double.

With the loss, the Lady Tigers fall to 7-21 overall and 2-13 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), while the Aggies improve to 20-8 and 12-3 in the conference. A&T is currently in second place in the conference, behind the undefeated Hampton University (24-5, 15-0).

Savannah State opened the contest with a 6-0 run to take an 8-3 lead in the first four minutes. Blessing Uba sank a jump shot at the 13:06 mark for a 12-8 SSU advantage.

Out of a timeout, the Aggies brought on the pressure. A&T's Adriana Nazario dropped a 3-pointer with 11:09 to play, tying the game at 12. With the momentum shift, the Aggies jumped out to a 16-12 lead behind a layup from King.

SSU bounced back with layups from Hogue and Norman to tie the game at 16 with 6:49 to play. A&T responded with a 9-1 run to take a 25-17 lead with 4:45 to play in the opening half.  Six-time MEAC Rookie of the Week, Eboni Ross capped the run for the Aggies with a layup.

The Lady Tigers worked to regain some ground in the final minutes of the half. Uba drained a 3-pointer with 3:15 to play, cutting the Aggies lead to 25-20. Norman added a jumper a minute later to get SSU within three points of A&T's lead, 22-25 with 2:40 on the clock.

Ross and King added three more points for the Aggies in the final two and half minutes to lift A&T to a 28-22 lead into the locker room. Both teams sank 10 of 30 offerings from the field in the first half. SSU was 50 percent from the charity strip, while A&T went 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.

A&T opened the second half with a 4-0 run, taking a 10 point lead two minutes in. Jazmin Thomas broke the run and sparked some offensive for the Lady Tigers with a jumper.

SSU's Charmaine Greene then cut into the Aggies lead with six straight points in the subsequent four minutes. Greene sank a short jumper at the 14:37 mark to help the Lady Tigers within four points, 30-34, of the Aggies lead.

The Aggies responded with four straight points, but Norman hit a 3-pointer at the 12:41 mark, making it a five-point game, 38-33, with 12:14 to play.

The Aggie then broke loose with a 16-2 run in the following six minutes. King sank a fast break layup at the 6:08 mark to give A&T a 54-35 lead. The Lady Tigers were unable to recover from the Aggies run in the final minutes, only getting within 11 points on a final jump shot from Chantrell Frazier.

The Lady Tigers shot 39.2 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent (4-for-9) from beyond the arc. The Aggies shot at a 35.6 percent clip from the floor and 54.5 percent from the charity strip.

Savannah State returns to the hardwood in their final regular season game. The Lady Tigers host Maryland Eastern Shore on March 7 in Tiger Arena. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
