TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida A&M racked up 22 hits en route to a sweep of Savannah State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader, Saturday in Tallahassee, Florida at James Messer Field.
The Lady Rattlers blanked SSU 6-0 in the first game, blasting 10 hits in their first MEAC win of the season. In game two, FAMU routed the Lady Tigers 14-6 in five innings after putting up 11 runs in the first two innings.
Savannah State's record falls to 17-14 and 1-2 in the conference, while FAMU improves to 10-27 and 2-1 in the MEAC. The Lady Rattlers won the three-game series with the sweep after Savannah State took the first game on Friday.
Shutout
Savannah State entered game one with the momentum after rallying in the first game of the series on Friday to beat FAMU 4-2. The Lady Rattlers quickly took the advantage and any momentum from SSU.
In the bottom of the first inning, Kieifi Myrick singled to left, scoring Ashanti Shepherd who reached on a bunt single. Brielle Gordon singled up the middle to score Myrick and lift FAMU to a 2-0 lead.
Both teams went scoreless through the following two innings. In the bottom of the fourth, FAMU tacked a third run behind an RBI single from Genesis Lopez.
In the sixth, FAMU blasted four hits, scoring three more runs for the final score. The Lady Tigers threatened in the top of the seventh, with hits from
India Morgan and
Imani Gayle, but a pop-up ended the game, stranding both runners.
Amber Hallman, Morgan,
Tiffany Taylor, Gayle and
Antonette Smith all had a hit for the Lady Tigers. Gordon led the Lady Rattlers at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one RBI.
SSU senior
Madison Hedderly was tagged with her 7
th loss of the season after six innings of work. Hedderly allowed six earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.
Ashleigh Minter garnered her second pitching win of the season with 6.2 innings of work. She allowed no runs on five hits with no strikeouts.
Routed
Savannah State hit the ball in game two of the twinbill, but struggled to score the runs as the Lady Rattlers blasted 12 hits and quelled a late rally from SSU for a 14-6, five inning rout.
FAMU opened game two with a six run first inning. The Lady Rattlers had two hits and took advantage of several wild pitches and walks for the 6-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Savannah State responded with a run. Morgan reached on a single to short and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Lady Rattlers continued to hold the momentum in the bottom of the frame, blasting four hits and scoring five additional runs for an 11-1 lead after two complete innings. SSU added another run in the top of the third, but FAMU again responded with two more runs in the bottom for a 13-2 lead.
Continuing to fight, SSU found some room to work in the top of the fourth.
Megan Uhrman singled to score Gayle who reached on a single. Hallman singled to score Smith who also singled. Freshman
Torrian Wright joined the party with an RBI single to center field, scoring
Michaela Patton who reached on s single to short.
Later, Hedderly reached on a fielder's choice that scored Uhrman, cutting FAMU's lead to 13-6. SSU racked up six hits in the inning.
The Lady Rattlers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fourth for a 14-6 lead. In the fifth, FAMU sat the first three SSU batters, ending the game early due to mercy rule.
Savannah State had 10 hits in the contest, and was led at the plate by Uhrman, who went 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Patton finished 2-for-2 with two runs. Gordon again led the Lady Rattlers, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs.
Jennifer Lindsey picked up her fifth pitching win of the season for FAMU. Lindsey finished 3.2 innings with one run on three hits and two strikeouts.
SSU freshman
Amanda McDowell was tagged with the loss after half an inning of work. She allowed five earned runs on one hit with two strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers return to action with a three-game MEAC series in Savannah against North Carolina Central, beginning on April 6. The twinbill on April 6 is set for a 1 p.m. start.
