Eagles Edge By SSU

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central's lone senior, Chasidy Williams, sank a free-throw with two seconds on the clock and drained a buzzer beating 3-pointer to give the Lady Eagles a 33-29 victory over Savannah State on senior day in Durham, North Carolina, Saturday.

The Lady Tigers drop their fifth straight, and fall to 7-20 overall and 2-12 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). North Carolina Central improves to 2-25 overall and 2-12 in the conference. The Eagles only two wins of the 2012-13 season have come against Savannah State.

SSU senior Erin Hogue led the Lady Tigers with her 11th double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Jasmine Norman scored 10 points for SSU.  Central's Tisha Dixon led the field with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Williams finished with 6 points and 11 rebounds.

Charmaine Greene sank a layup with 14:02 on the clock to give the Lady Tigers a 6-3 lead in an offensively slow first half. The Lady Eagles got within one point, 5-6, of SSU's lead behind a layup from Dixon a few minutes later.

The Lady Tigers jumped back out to a seven point lead in the subsequent six minutes with an 8-2 run, capped by a jump shot from Hogue, giving SSU a 14-7 lead with 5:40 to play in the opening period.

With 1:16 till the half, Nicole Shelton sank a jumper to give SSU their largest lead of the game, 18-9. The Lady Tigers shot a discouraging 25.8 percent from the floor in the first half, hitting only eight of 31 attempts.

NCCU's Amber Neely drained a layup with 54 seconds to play for the last points of the period, as SSU led the Eagles 18-11 into the locker room. The Eagles managed a 21.1 percent clip from the floor in the first half, hitting only four of 19 attempts. NCCU shot 75 percent (3-for-4) from the charity strip.

The Eagles opened the second half with a 7-2 run closing the gap with SSU to 18-19 with 14:33 on the clock.

The Lady Tigers responded with back-to-back baskets from Norman and Hogue for a 23-18 lead. With 6:20 to play, Norman scored on a layup for a 27-21 SSU advantage.

NCCU responded in the next two minutes with a 6-0 run to tie the game up at 27 with 4:11 to play. A minute later, the Lady Eagles got their first lead of the second period on a layup from Aja Hoyle for a 29-27 advantage.

The game went scoreless for the next two and half minutes. With 20 seconds on the clock, Hogue was fouled when she went up for a rebound. She drained both free-throws to tie the game (29) for the fourth time.

Shawanda Hanton stole the ball from the Eagles with five seconds to play, and headed down the court, passing to Norman. Norman missed a layup and on a controversial judgment was called for a foul on Williams.

Williams hit one of two free-throws with 02 on the clock to give the Eagles a 30-29 lead. On the SSU inbounds, Williams stole the ball and offered up a half-court shot that slipped in as the buzzer sounded.

The Lady Tigers return to action in their second to last regular season game on Monday against North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, North Carolina. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
