SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team swept a doubleheader with Savannah State on Friday at the new Lady Tiger Field in Savannah.
A late rally from the Lady Tigers in the seventh inning of game one fell short as the Lady Hawks held onto to win 11-10. In the second game, Maryland Eastern Shore rallied in the seventh to sweep the doubleheader with a 6-5 win.
Savannah State falls to 14-10 overall, while the Lady Hawks improve to 7-12. The Lady Tigers conclude the series with UMES on Saturday with a second doubleheader.
Tigers Quelled                              
The Lady Tigers trailed 6-11 into the seventh inning of the first game. 
Megan Uhrman reached on an error to open the bottom of the seventh. 
Torrian Wright scored Uhrman with a home run over the left field wall to cut the Lady Hawks lead to 11-8.
Tiffany Taylor came to the plate late in the inning with two outs on the board. Taylor homered to left, scoring 
Imani Gayle who was hit with a pitch to put SSU within one run of the visitors. UMES' catcher Rachel Vander Ven caught a pop-up from 
Rachel White to end the Lady Tigers rally.
Carmen Gurrola garnered her sixth pitching win of the season for the Lady Hawks. Gurrola finished a complete game in the circle, allowing 10 runs (four earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts.
SSU senior 
Cassie Standard was tagged with her first loss of the season after seven innings on the bump. She allowed 11 runs (three earned) on 11 hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
After a scoreless opening inning, UMES put three on the board in the top of the second inning. Vanessa Gomez singled to score Belen Benitez who doubled to reach. Gomez was later scored on a single from Cherokee Williams. Later, Williams scored on an error.
SSU failed to answer the three runs in the bottom of the frame. UMES tacked on seven more runs in the top of the third behind three hits and two costly SSU errors for a 10-0 lead.
The Lady Tigers got on the board in the fourth. Aaliya Jones, pinch running for Wright, scored on a wild pitch to dent the board. White blasted a single to left, scoring 
India Morgan who was hit with a pitch.
White and Gayle scored on errors to cut the Lady Hawks lead to 10-4 after four complete innings.
UMES added a single run in the fifth, and SSU answered with two in the bottom of the frame. After a scoreless sixth, SSU trailed UMES 6-11 into the final inning.
Wright led the Lady Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI. White and 
Antonette Smith each added two hits.
Hawks Rally
SSU led Maryland Eastern Shore 5-3 into the seventh inning. Jasmine James singled through the left side to score Gurrola who walked and stole second. Morgan King scored on a passed ball to tie the game up at five after reaching on a single.
With one out, James scored on a ground-out to second from Trenece Nash to put the Lady Hawks up 6-5. In the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Tigers put the tying run in scoring position, with no outs. A strikeout, and two fly outs from SSU ended the game.
Benitez garnered her first pitching win of the year after a complete game in the circle. She allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with a single strikeout and five walks.
SSU senior 
Madison Hedderly was tagged with the pitching loss. Hedderly allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks in seven innings of work.
Wright led the Lady Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBI. Smith added two hits for SSU.
The Lady Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Hallman singled to score 
Michaela Patton, who walked. Later, Wright singled to score Hallman and lift SSU to a 2-0 advantage.
SSU added another run in the third for a 3-0 lead. In the fifth, Hedderly homered to center field, platting Wright who walked for a 5-0 SSU lead.
The Lady Hawks answered in the top of the sixth with five hits and three runs to cut SSU's lead to 5-3 into the final inning.
