NORFOLK, Va. – After a tough season, filled with an array of injuries, the Savannah State women's basketball team's season came to an end on Monday in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship in Norfolk, Virginia at Scope Arena.
The Lady Tigers fell, 35-50, to the fourth seeded South Carolina State in the team's third match up this season. SSU entered the tournament as the 13
th seed after concluding the regular season with a 7-22 overall record and a 2-13 conference record.
SSU and S.C. State were 1-1 over the season, prior to the tournament game. The Lady Tigers only MEAC win since losing junior point guard 
Ezinne Kalu to injury came against S.C. State. SSU beat the Bulldogs 49-46 in Tiger Arena on February 9.
Sophomore 
Jasmine Norman led the Lady Tigers with 13 points. Brittany Cochran led the Bulldogs with 16 points and six rebounds. S.C. State outrebounded the Lady Tigers 47-26 in the contest.
After trailing through the opening six minutes, 
Jazmin Thomas dropped a 3-pointer with 14:44 to play, giving SSU a 5-4 advantage. The Bulldogs answered with an 8-1 run in the subsequent five minutes, capped by a layup from Cabriel Duren with 11:35 to play.
The Lady Tigers cut the Bulldogs lead to four points with 10:30 to play on a layup from Norman. S.C. State's Tiara Knotts answered with a layup setting the Bulldogs lead at 14-8.
A host of turnovers and missed shots from both teams resulted in a six minute scoring drought. The Bulldogs broke the scoreless minutes with a layup, but SSU answered with back-to-back baskets from Norman and Thomas, to cut S.C. State's lead to 16-12 with 3:17 to play in the first half.
In the final three minutes of the half the Bulldogs held on to their lead. With 22 seconds to play, Cochran drained a layup to give S.C. State a 23-14 lead into the locker room.
The Lady Tigers opened the second half with a 6-0 run to cut the Bulldogs lead to 23-20 with 16:22 on the clock.
S.C. State responded with a 10-0 run that saw Fannie Goodwin score four points, and Cochran sink six of the run's points. With 10:57 to play, the Bulldogs held a 33-20 lead.
The offensive spout from S.C. State sealed the deal for the Bulldogs as SSU struggled in the final 10 minutes. S.C. State went up by 18 (47-29), their largest lead, with 5:25 to play behind a 3-pointer from Cherisha Floyd.
SSU managed only six points in the final minutes of the game. S.C. State shot 35.2 percent from the floor in the game, while the Lady Tigers managed a 26.1 percent clip.
The Lady Tigers close the 2012-13 campaign with a 7-23 overall record.
