Hartford Routs SSU

MIAMI, Fla. – The Savannah State softball team closed out the Florida International Softball Classic with a rematch against the University of Hartford Sunday afternoon. The Hawks avenged their close loss to SSU on Saturday with a 13-0 victory and their first win of the season, on Sunday.

Kaitlyn Meade pitched a full game in the circle for the Hawks, allowing no runs on four hits for her first win of the year. Amanda McDowell was tagged with the loss for the Lady Tigers after 3.1 innings of work. She allowed nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits. She had four strikeouts and five walks.

In the opening frame, Hartford's Sawyer Fried plated Amber Andrews on a single, and Jenice Aloyo scored on a throwing error to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

SSU had three hits in the first three innings, but were unable to convert them into runs as the game entered the fourth with Hartford leading 2-0.

Hartford blasted eight hits in the top of the fourth, scoring 11 runs to take a 13-0 lead. Kate Wacky led the Hawks, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Fried went 2-for-3, while Erica Phelps was 2-for-4.

Michaela Patton, Megan Uhrman, Katherine Steward and Torrian Wright all had a hit a piece for the Lady Tigers.

SSU had only one more hit in the final innings, as Hartford closed out the rout with a mercy rule win in the fifth inning.

SSU falls to 7-7 on the season, while Hartford improves to 1-4. The Lady Tigers are led at the plate by Wright who is batting .447 with 12 RBI and five home runs.

The Lady Tigers return to action March 1, against Mississippi Valley State in the Tiny Laster Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama.
